Why a desktop app when Conferbot runs in the browser?
Everything in the desktop app is available at app.conferbot.com, and for most people the browser is fine. The app solves one specific problem: browser tabs are terrible at getting your attention.
When a visitor asks for a human, that request is only valuable for as long as they are still on the page. If your inbox is the eleventh tab in a window behind your IDE, a browser notification competes with every other tab making noise, and Chrome throttles background timers to save battery. The result is a handover request answered four minutes late, by which point the visitor has gone.
A native app changes the delivery path. Handover alerts arrive through macOS Notification Center with a dock badge, at the same priority as Slack or Mail. The app launches at login and stays in the dock, so the inbox is one click away rather than one tab hunt away. That is the whole pitch — it is a better delivery mechanism for the same product, not a different product.
Who this is actually for
It is worth installing if you or your team spend the working day in the live-chat inbox: support agents fielding handovers, a founder who is also the support team, or anyone whose response time is a metric someone looks at.
It is worth skipping if you mostly use Conferbot to build and edit flows rather than to answer conversations. The drag-and-drop builder is identical in both, and building is not something that benefits from an OS-level notification.
It works with everything you already set up
The desktop app is a window onto the same workspace, not a separate install of Conferbot. Whatever you have already connected keeps working, and anything you connect later shows up without you touching the app. The website widget keeps running from the same snippet on your site — the install guide covers that snippet for WordPress, Shopify, Webflow, Wix, Squarespace and plain HTML, and none of it changes because you installed a Mac app.
The same holds for the rest of the surface area. Conversations from your messaging channels land in the one inbox the app opens on. Chats coming from an iOS or Android app through the mobile SDKs arrive in exactly the same place as chats from your website. And a flow you build from a template behaves identically whether you edited it in the browser at lunchtime or in the app afterwards, because both are reading and writing the same workspace. There is nothing to sync, no desktop-only setting, and no second place to keep configuration up to date.

If macOS blocks the install
The most common cause is opening the DMG before the download has finished writing. Delete the file, download it again, and wait for the transfer to complete before opening it.
If Gatekeeper still refuses, open System Settings → Privacy and Security, scroll to the Security section, and choose Open Anyway next to the Conferbot entry. This is the standard macOS flow for a first launch and does not bypass notarization — macOS has already verified the signature at that point.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Conferbot desktop app free?
Yes. The macOS app is free to download and use with any Conferbot plan, including the free plan. It is a client for your existing account rather than a separate product, so there is nothing extra to buy and no separate licence to manage.
Which macOS versions are supported?
macOS 10.13 High Sierra and later. The download is a universal binary, so the same file runs natively on both Intel Macs and Apple Silicon (M-series) without Rosetta.
Is the app safe to install?
It is code-signed with an Apple Developer ID and notarized by Apple, which means Apple has scanned the build for malicious components before it reached you. macOS verifies that signature on first launch, and Gatekeeper will refuse to open any build that has been tampered with after signing.
macOS says the app cannot be opened. What do I do?
That warning usually means the DMG was still being written when it was opened, or the download was interrupted. Delete the file, download it again, and open the DMG only once it has fully finished. If macOS still blocks it, open System Settings, go to Privacy and Security, scroll to the Security section and choose Open Anyway next to the Conferbot entry.
How do updates work?
The app updates itself silently in the background, so you stay on the current version without downloading a new DMG each time. You do not need to uninstall the old version first.
Is there a Windows version?
Not yet — Windows is in progress. In the meantime Conferbot runs fully in any modern browser at app.conferbot.com, with the same inbox, builder and analytics. The desktop app adds native notifications and a dock presence, not extra product features.
Do I need the desktop app to use Conferbot?
No. Everything in the desktop app is available in the browser. The app exists for people who spend their day in the live-chat inbox and want handover alerts to reach them through the operating system rather than a background browser tab.
Does the desktop app work offline?
No. Conferbot is a hosted platform, so the app needs an internet connection to reach your conversations, bots and analytics. It is a native shell around your live account, not a local copy of your data.
