How Discord colours text

Discord has no colour picker and no colour markdown. What it has is syntax highlighting for code blocks, and one of the languages it understands is ansi: the same escape codes a terminal uses to print red errors and green success lines. Open a block with three backticks and the word ansi, and the client reads every ESC[…m sequence inside it as an instruction to change the colour or style of whatever follows.

The escape character is an invisible control byte, which is the only hard part. You cannot type it on a keyboard, so the practical route is to build the text somewhere that can produce it, such as this page or a bot, and paste the result. That is also why colours vanish when the text passes through a tool that strips control characters on the way.

Each sequence here begins with 0, a full reset, before adding its own codes. That way a part never inherits the underline or background of the part before it, which is the most common surprise when writing these by hand.

Every code Discord renders

The classic eight colours are the same set for text and background; the background code is the text code plus ten. Shades shown are the dark theme's.

What changed in 2026

August: the palette moved. For years the eight colours were a fixed Solarized set, and most generators and guides still quote those hex values. Discord now paints them from its own design tokens, and the shade depends on the reader's theme: the same code is a touch darker in light mode than in the darker themes. If a guide promises an exact hex value for “ansi red”, it is describing the old client.

October: far more codes. Italic and strikethrough now render, and so does 24-bit colour, which means brand colours instead of the nearest of eight. Older clients that do not understand a code simply ignore it, so a custom colour degrades to the default text colour rather than breaking the message.

Readers on the mobile apps have historically seen ansi blocks without colour, as plain monospaced text. Write the message so it still reads well uncoloured: use colour to emphasise words, not to carry meaning on its own.

Sending colored text from a bot

A bot posts an ansi block exactly as a person does: as normal message content sent through Discord's REST API. In JavaScript the escape is \u001b inside a string, and in Python it is \x1b, so "```ansi\n\u001b[0;32mOnline\u001b[0m\n```" prints a green word. The paste box above accepts that form too, so you can load a string straight out of your source, restyle it visually and copy it back.

Keep the 2,000-character limit in mind for status boards and leaderboards that a bot rebuilds on every update. Every part costs its escape sequence, so a table with a colour per cell can hit the limit long before the visible text looks long. The Discord API limits reference covers the message, embed and rate limits together, and the 50035 Invalid Form Body error is what Discord returns when content goes over.

For richer layouts than a code block allows, the Discord embed builder designs embeds with colour bars and fields, and a Discord chatbot can post either kind of message on a schedule or in answer to members.

Discord colored text questions

How do I make colored text in Discord?

Wrap your text in a code block whose language is ansi, then put an ANSI escape sequence before each part you want coloured. Typing the escape character by hand is awkward, which is why a generator helps: style the text here, press copy, and paste the whole block into Discord. The colours appear once the message is sent.

Why does my colored text show up as plain text?

Three usual causes. The block must start with three backticks followed directly by ansi on the same line. The escape character must be the real control byte, not the letters \u001b, which is what a bot's source code often contains. And the reader's client has to support it: the desktop app and the browser do, while the mobile apps have historically shown the block uncoloured.

Which colors does Discord support in ANSI code blocks?

Eight classic colours, each usable as text (codes 30 to 37) or background (40 to 47): black, red, green, yellow, blue, pink, cyan and light gray. Since October 2026 the desktop client also renders 24-bit custom colours written as 38;2;R;G;B or 48;2;R;G;B. Since August 2026 the exact shade of the classic eight follows the reader's theme.

Can I use bold, italic, underline and strikethrough together?

Yes. Bold (1) and underline (4) have worked in ansi blocks since colour support arrived, and italic (3) and strikethrough (9) render on current desktop builds. Codes combine in one sequence separated by semicolons, so 1;4;31 is bold, underlined red. The generator writes the combined sequence for you whenever more than one style box is ticked.

Does colored text work in embeds, webhooks and bot messages?

A webhook or bot can post an ansi block in ordinary message content exactly as a person can, and it renders the same way. Inside an embed, code blocks are allowed in the description and field values, so the colours carry over there too. The 2,000-character content limit counts every escape character, so heavily styled messages fill it faster than you expect.

Is there a limit on how much colored text I can send?

The message limit applies, and every invisible escape sequence counts toward it. A short sequence such as the one for red text adds about six characters, and a custom colour adds about seventeen. The counter under the output shows the real length of what you are about to paste, and turns red past Discord's 2,000-character limit for a normal message.
