Tidio vs Intercom (2026)
Tidio for small teams that fit inside its 10-seat, metered-AI box; Intercom for mid-market teams that need enterprise support tooling and can absorb per-seat plus per-resolution billing. Each has a pricing trap - Tidio's is a cliff, Intercom's is a meter.
Prices and product status verified 1 September 2026. We build a competing product (Conferbot) - where it appears below, it is labeled.
Tidio and Intercom sit at opposite ends of the same market. Tidio is the SMB tool: quick to install, a real free plan, ecommerce-friendly, priced for small teams. Intercom is the mid-market incumbent: a full support suite with a help center, workflows and the most heavily marketed AI agent in the category. Comparing them is really a question about which side of that line your team is on - and which of two very different billing models hurts less as you grow.

Two pricing traps, honestly compared
Tidio's trap is a cliff. The plan stack jumps from Growth at ~$59/month directly to Plus at $749/month - a 12x step with nothing in between. A team that outgrows Growth (more than 10 seats, or volume past the metered limits) faces a choice between paying enterprise money for an SMB product or migrating. On top of that, three things meter separately: conversations, automation flows, and Lyro AI (~$39 per 100 AI conversations), so a busy month moves three dials at once.
Intercom's trap is a meter. There is no cliff - the bill just climbs continuously. Seats are $29-$132 each per month, and Fin bills $0.99 for every conversation it resolves, with a 50-outcome monthly floor. The perverse part is that the better Fin performs, the more you pay: successful automation raises the bill. A 5-seat team on Advanced with 1,000 Fin resolutions is ~$1,400/month.
Neither model is dishonest; both are disclosed. But you should know which failure mode you are signing up for: Tidio punishes growth in one jump, Intercom taxes it continuously.
Lyro vs Fin
Fin is the stronger AI on capability. It resolves against your help center and past conversations, handles multi-step outcomes, and Intercom publishes resolution-rate case studies aggressively. It is also the only major support AI billed per successful resolution, which makes its cost impossible to forecast without knowing your deflection rate in advance.
Lyro is simpler - trained on your site and FAQ content, aimed at answering the repetitive half of SMB support. The ~$39 per 100 AI conversations packaging is at least predictable, but it prices AI as a scarce add-on: a store doing 1,000 AI-handled chats a month is paying ~$390 for the AI alone, on top of the plan.
For reference, most of the mid-market alternatives now include AI answering in the plan price (Conferbot does, so does Crisp above its Plus tier). The per-conversation and per-resolution meters are increasingly the exception, not the norm.
The bill at three team sizes
The abstract models become concrete fast. Assumptions: annual pricing where it exists, Lyro purchased in 100-conversation blocks at ~$39, Fin at $0.99 per resolution.
2 agents, ~300 conversations a month, ~150 AI-handled
Tidio Starter (~$24) + two Lyro blocks (~$78) = ~$102/month. Intercom Essential 2 x $29 = $58 in seats + ~$148 in Fin resolutions = ~$206/month. Tidio wins the small case - as long as volume stays put.
6 agents, ~2,000 conversations, ~1,000 AI-handled
Tidio: Growth (~$59) is near its limits and Lyro needs ten blocks (~$390) = ~$449/month, uncomfortably close to the moment the 10-seat cap or a volume ceiling forces the $749 Plus conversation. Intercom Advanced: 6 x $85 = $510 + $990 Fin = ~$1,500/month. Tidio still cheaper - but both bills have tripled while the team merely doubled.
12 agents, ~5,000 conversations
Tidio: past the self-service seat cap; Plus from $749/month, negotiated. Intercom Advanced: 12 x $85 = $1,020 + ~$2,970 Fin (60% resolution) = ~$4,000/month. At this size the real question is whether either usage-priced model still makes sense - flat-workspace platforms hold their price here (Conferbot Business is $59/month with 15 seats; pricing), which is the comparison worth running before signing either enterprise tier.

Feature-by-feature
| Capability | Tidio | Intercom |
|---|---|---|
| Live chat + shared inbox | Yes - polished for small teams | Yes - deepest inbox in the category |
| AI answers | Lyro, metered per 100 conversations | Fin, metered per resolution |
| Help center | Basic | Mature (Articles) |
| Ecommerce (Shopify) | Best in tier - orders and carts in-chat | Via integrations, not native depth |
| Product tours / onboarding | No | Best in class (paid add-on) |
| Workflows / automation | Flows, metered separately | Workflows on Advanced+ |
| Reporting | Plan-gated basics | Deep, plan-gated |
| Seat ceiling | 10 on self-service plans | None - each seat billed |
| Channels | Web, email, Messenger, Instagram, WhatsApp (add-ons) | Web, email, WhatsApp/SMS/phone via metered add-ons |
Read the matrix vertically and the story is consistent: Intercom is more product at more price at every row; Tidio is enough product at small scale. The rows that most often decide it in practice are ecommerce depth (Tidio) and product tours (Intercom) - if neither matters to you, price shape decides.
Switching between them (either direction)
Tidio to Intercom
The common growth path. Contacts and transcripts export cleanly; Flows must be rebuilt as Intercom Workflows - budget a week, and prune rather than port. The real preparation is financial: model Fin costs from your current Lyro volume before signing, because the same conversation load that cost ~$39 per 100 on Lyro bills per resolution on Fin, and a well-tuned Fin resolves more than half of it.
Intercom to Tidio
The cost-retreat path, and it works only if you fit the box you are moving into: 10 seats or fewer, volume inside Growth's limits, no dependence on Articles, tours, or advanced reporting. Teams that half-fit end up on Plus at $749 and save little. Run the two-week parallel test on one channel before committing either way - and consider whether a flat-rate platform between the two boxes (Conferbot vs Tidio / vs Intercom) makes the retreat unnecessary.
Decision guide by situation
| Your situation | Better fit | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Shopify store, 1-3 agents | Tidio | Lyro block costs once AI volume grows |
| SaaS with onboarding tours and a docs site | Intercom | Fin billing scales with your success at deflection |
| Support team of 8-10 and growing | Neither is comfortable | Tidio's seat cap ahead; Intercom's per-seat curve steepens |
| Budget fixed, volume unpredictable | Flat-rate platform | Both metered models make spiky months expensive |
| Already on Intercom, bill is the only complaint | Stay and cap Fin first | Migration costs often exceed a year of savings - see alternatives guide |
Questions to ask on each vendor call
For Tidio
- "Show the bill for a month where conversations, Flows and Lyro all run 30% over our estimate" - three meters means three overage behaviours; see them together.
- "What exactly happens at seat 11?" - get the Plus floor price for your case in writing before you are at seat 9.
- "Which Lyro limitations apply to our language and our content type?" - AI add-ons vary most at the edges.
For Intercom
- "Model Fin costs at our deflection rate, and at ten points higher" - the second number is the one that surprises teams a quarter in.
- "What in this demo is Essential, and what is Advanced or Expert?" - the demo is usually run on the top tier.
- "What is your data-export path if we leave?" - ask before signing, when the answer is cheapest.
And for both: "What does month 13 cost?" Renewal pricing, not intro pricing, is what you will actually live with.
How this comparison was verified
Prices, plan structures and limits come from both vendors' public pricing pages and documentation, held in our maintained competitor research files and last human-verified on the date at the top of this page - the date changes only when the facts have been re-checked. Tidio's block pricing and Intercom's Fin rates both shifted during 2025-2026, which is exactly why worked examples here carry their assumptions inline: change the assumption, redo the arithmetic, and the conclusion is yours to keep or discard. Corrections: tell us, we fix and credit. Disclosure, as at the top: Conferbot is our product and is labeled wherever it appears.
Which one fits which team
Pick Tidio if you are an ecommerce or small service business, five seats or fewer, that wants live chat plus decent automation running today. Its Shopify integration and order-management-in-chat remain best in class for the price, and the free plan is genuinely usable for evaluation.
Pick Intercom if you run a structured support operation - SLAs, reporting, a help center, multiple teams - and the tooling depth earns back the bill. Nobody matches its product-tour and onboarding suite. Budget honestly for Fin, and note the Salesforce acquisition (signed June 2026, not yet closed): pricing and packaging after close are anyone's guess.
Pick neither if your actual complaint is the billing model. Between Tidio's cliff and Intercom's meter sits a band of flat-rate platforms - Conferbot at $19-$59/month per workspace with AI included and a free plan, Crisp per-workspace - where adding a seat or a resolved conversation does not move the invoice. Frequently asked questions
Is Tidio cheaper than Intercom?
At entry level, yes: Tidio's Starter is ~$29/month total while Intercom is $29 per seat. The gap narrows with AI usage - Tidio's Lyro runs ~$39 per 100 AI conversations, and Intercom's Fin bills $0.99 per resolution - and reverses at scale, where Tidio forces a jump from $59/month Growth to $749/month Plus.
What is the Tidio pricing cliff?
Tidio's self-service plans top out at Growth (~$59/month, 10 seats maximum). The next tier is Plus, from $749/month - a 12x jump with nothing in between. Teams that outgrow Growth either pay enterprise pricing or migrate.
How is Intercom's Fin AI billed?
Fin costs $0.99 for every conversation it successfully resolves, plus $9.99 per lead qualification, with a 50-outcome monthly minimum (roughly a $49 floor). It is billed on top of per-seat plan pricing, so the total bill rises with both headcount and automation success.
Which has the better free option, Tidio or Intercom?
Tidio - it has a permanent free plan with basic live chat and chatbot features. Intercom offers only a 14-day trial and requires payment details. Among comparable platforms, Conferbot's free plan includes 600 conversations a month with no card.
Should I worry about Intercom's Salesforce acquisition?
It is a factor, not a blocker. The agreement was signed in June 2026 and had not closed as of this writing. Acquisitions of this size usually mean repackaged pricing and a changed roadmap within 12-24 months, so sign annual rather than multi-year terms and keep your data export path tested.
Can Tidio replace Intercom for a SaaS company?
For a small SaaS running support chat and FAQs, yes. It cannot replace Intercom's product tours, Articles help center, or advanced reporting - the three features mid-market SaaS teams most often cite as the reason they stay. If none of the three is in use, the swap usually survives; if any is, budget for keeping or replacing it separately.
Do Tidio or Intercom charge per conversation?
Both meter, differently. Tidio meters plan conversations, automation flows and Lyro AI conversations as three separate counters; Intercom charges per seat and then per AI-resolved conversation via Fin. Neither bill is flat - which is the main reason flat-workspace platforms are a rising third option in this bracket.
Which is easier to set up, Tidio or Intercom?
Tidio, decisively. A working widget with basic automation is an afternoon; Intercom's value depends on configuring inbox rules, Workflows and Fin's knowledge sources, which is a project measured in weeks. Setup effort tracks product depth on both sides.
