Nine ways to build a Slack chatbot compared from their own pricing pages: Conferbot, Slack Workflow Builder, Slack AI, Botpress, Flow XO, BotPenguin, Zapier, n8n and Bolt. Free plans, prices, how each connects, and which fits your team.

Key Takeaways
  • For most teams the best Slack chatbot builder is the one that matches who will use the bot.
  • If employees need answers from your own documents with a person to fall back on, a no-code AI builder such as Conferbot is the quickest route.
  • If you only need forms, approvals and simple automations inside Slack, start with Slack's own Workflow Builder, included on paid Slack plans.
  • For an engineered AI agent , Botpress.

The short answer

For most teams the best Slack chatbot builder is the one that matches who will use the bot. If employees need answers from your own documents with a person to fall back on, a no-code AI builder such as Conferbot is the quickest route. If you only need forms, approvals and simple automations inside Slack, start with Slack's own Workflow Builder, included on paid Slack plans. For an engineered AI agent, Botpress. For connecting Slack to other apps, Zapier or n8n. And if the bot is a product you will ship, build it with Slack's Bolt framework.

Plans and prices below were read from each vendor's pricing and integration pages on 3 November 2026. This is a desk comparison of published information, not a hands-on benchmark.

Slack bots fall into two families that are easy to confuse. Internal bots answer employees: IT questions, HR policies, onboarding, how-do-I requests. Notification and automation bots push information into channels and run approvals. Most of the tools here are strong at one family and adequate at the other, so the first decision is which family your bot belongs to.

This list compares eight options, puts them side by side, explains the Slack limits every builder inherits, and ends with a decision table. If you already know you want a no-code bot answering in your workspace today, add a Slack chatbot with Conferbot and skip ahead to the limits section.

How we compared these builders

This is a desk comparison, not a lab test. We did not run a benchmark or measure response times, and nothing below claims we did. For each option we read the vendor's own pricing page, plan comparison and Slack integration documentation on 3 November 2026, and recorded what was actually published that day: the free plan and its limits, the entry paid price, whether Slack is included on that plan, and how the connection to Slack is made.

We scored nothing out of ten. Instead each entry lists what we could verify, where the product is strong, where it falls short, and who it suits, because the right builder depends far more on your use case than on a single score. Where a vendor did not publish a number, or blocked automated access to its pricing page, we say so rather than quoting a third-party figure that may be stale.

Prices change often, sometimes monthly, and several vendors price by contacts or messages rather than by seats. Treat every figure here as the published list price on the check date, confirm it on the vendor's site before you buy, and remember that platform fees charged by the channel itself are separate from any builder's subscription. Slack's own plan matters too: some Slack features, including Workflow Builder, are not on Slack's free plan, so the cheapest builder can still require a paid Slack workspace.

Conferbot is our product, so we have described it strictly from our own published plan limits and from how the product actually works today, and we have listed its weaknesses for this channel as plainly as everyone else's.

The units are not comparable across rows: conversations, interactions, tasks and executions all count different things. A two-step Zap that posts a Slack message uses one task each time it runs; a chatbot conversation can contain many messages but counts once on a conversation-based plan. Estimate your volume in the unit each tool actually bills.

1. Conferbot: no-code AI chatbot for Slack and every other channel

Conferbot is a visual chatbot builder whose bots run on Slack, Microsoft Teams, a website widget, WhatsApp, Telegram, Discord, Messenger and mobile apps from one flow. In Slack the bot answers in direct messages and when it is mentioned in channels. You can design a structured flow, switch on an AI agent that answers from your knowledge base, or combine the two so the flow handles known requests and the AI handles the rest.

Connecting is designed to be quick. The default is Connect: Slack asks you to approve the Conferbot app for your workspace and the bot is live, with no Slack app to create and no tokens to copy. If your security team requires an app you own, the own-app route generates a Slack app manifest for you; you create the app from it, install it, and paste the bot token and signing secret into Conferbot, which then shows the Event Subscriptions and Interactivity URLs to add. Our Slack token types guide explains what each of those credentials is.

One naming note: Slack also appears in Conferbot's integrations list, which is a different thing. The integration posts notifications into a Slack channel from a bot running elsewhere, such as a lead alert from your website bot, and that integration needs the Pro plan. Slack as a channel, where the bot talks to people in Slack, is on every plan.

Human handoverEvery plan, into a shared inbox
Slack notifications integrationPro and up

Where it is strong

  • AI answers from your own documents and web pages, with a person able to take over the conversation from the inbox.
  • No Slack app to build on the default route, so an internal bot can be live the same day.
  • The same bot can serve employees on Microsoft Teams and customers on the website, so you maintain one knowledge base.
  • Does not depend on a paid Slack plan.

Where it falls short

  • Not a replacement for Workflow Builder's forms and approvals inside Slack's own UI.
  • Does not register Slack slash commands; people DM or mention the bot.
  • Native integrations such as HubSpot or Google Sheets need Pro.

Best for: IT, HR and operations teams that want an AI help bot in Slack with a person behind it, possibly the same bot on Teams or the web.

2. Slack Workflow Builder: forms and approvals without a separate tool

Workflow Builder is Slack's own no-code tool for workflows: collect information with a form, route a request to an approver, post a message on a schedule, or react when someone joins a channel. Because it lives inside Slack, there is nothing to install and permissions follow your workspace. Slack lists Workflow Builder on its Pro, Business+ and Enterprise+ plans; it is not listed on the free plan.

It is not a conversational chatbot. A workflow runs a fixed sequence of steps; it does not hold an open-ended conversation or answer a free-text question from a knowledge base. Many teams use it alongside a chatbot: Workflow Builder for structured requests such as access approvals, and a bot for the long tail of questions.

What we checkedAs listed on 3 November 2026
Free planNot listed on Slack's free plan

Conversational answersNo; step-based workflows
Pricing unitYour Slack seats

Where it is strong

  • Native to Slack, nothing extra to buy if you are on a paid plan.
  • Excellent for forms, approvals and scheduled posts.
  • Admins already understand its permissions.

Where it falls short

  • Not available on Slack's free plan.
  • No free-text Q and A or knowledge-base answers.
  • Workflows live only in Slack, so nothing carries over to Teams or the web.

Best for: teams on a paid Slack plan that need structured requests and approvals rather than a Q and A bot.

3. Slackbot and Slack AI: built-in assistance

Slack bundles AI features into its plans: conversation summaries and AI search on Free and Pro, more advanced AI on Business+ and Enterprise+, and Slackbot as a personal AI agent. Slack's pricing page says Free and Pro get only a limited trial of Slackbot, with ongoing access on Business+ and Enterprise+, and that Salesforce customers who connect their CRM will receive ongoing Slackbot access, marked as coming soon.

These features are about helping an individual work with what is already in Slack: summarise a thread, find a message. They are not a way to publish a support bot that answers employees from your HR policies or IT runbooks with a defined escalation path, which is what most "Slack chatbot" projects are.

Free and ProBasic AI (summaries, AI search); Slackbot as a limited trial
Business+ and Enterprise+Advanced AI and ongoing Slackbot access
Custom support botNot the purpose of these features
Pricing unitSlack seats

Where it is strong

  • Nothing to set up; it works on your existing Slack content.
  • Good for personal productivity: summaries and search.
  • Covered by the Slack plan you already pay for.

Where it falls short

  • Not designed as a configurable help desk bot with your own knowledge and escalation.
  • Ongoing Slackbot access needs the higher Slack plans.
  • Answers come from Slack content, not from documents that live elsewhere unless connected.

Best for: individuals who want AI help with Slack content itself rather than a published bot.

4. Botpress: AI agent platform with an official Slack integration

Botpress builds LLM-powered agents with a visual studio, knowledge bases and custom code. Its official Slack integration lets members chat with the bot in channels and direct messages, reply in threads (optionally only when mentioned), react to workspace events such as people joining a channel, and start proactive conversations. Setup is either a one-click authorize from the Botpress hub or your own Slack app built from the provided manifest, with token rotation.

Botpress notes one Slack quirk worth knowing: AI-generated messages render as Markdown by default, so rich text may not display correctly in Slack, which uses its own mrkdwn format, without extra processing.

Free plan100 conversations a month, 3 AI agents, 3 seats
Entry paid pricePlus at $150 a month billed annually
SlackOfficial integration with threads, events and proactive messages
Own-app optionYes, from a manifest, with token rotation

Where it is strong

  • Rich Slack event support, including channel joins and reactions.
  • Proactive messages and threaded replies.
  • Strong agent tooling for technical teams.

Where it falls short

  • Big price step from the 100-conversation free plan.
  • Markdown versus Slack mrkdwn needs handling for rich replies.
  • More engineering effort than a pure no-code tool.

Best for: technical teams building an AI agent that needs deep Slack event handling.

5. Flow XO: bots plus automations, Slack included

Flow XO combines chatbots with workflow automation across Slack, Telegram, Messenger, WhatsApp, web chat and SMS. Pricing is published and simple, which makes it easy to budget a small internal bot.

What we checkedAs listed on 3 November 2026
Free plan100 interactions a month, 5 bots or active flows
Entry paid price$25 a month (Standard: 5,000 interactions, 15 bots, 5 team members)
SlackSupported channel
Add-ons+25,000 interactions for $25; +5 bots for $10

Where it is strong

  • Transparent pricing with inexpensive add-ons.
  • Bots and automations in one tool.
  • Same bot can also run on Telegram or web chat.

Where it falls short

  • 100 free interactions is only enough to evaluate.
  • Smaller template library than the leaders.
  • AI usage metered through separate credits.

Best for: small teams that want a simple Slack bot with automation and predictable cost.

6. BotPenguin: multichannel, but Slack only on the top tier

BotPenguin covers WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, Telegram and websites from its free plan. Slack, however, appears only on its custom Emperor plan, and Microsoft Teams from the King plan at $99 a month. If Slack is your main channel, that puts BotPenguin in enterprise pricing territory; if Slack is a minor add-on to a customer-facing WhatsApp bot, it may still fit.

What we checkedAs listed on 3 November 2026
Free plan1,000 messages a month, 1 chatbot; no Slack
SlackEmperor plan only (custom pricing)
TeamsKing plan ($99 a month) and up
Pricing unitMessages

Where it is strong

  • Low-cost customer channels on lower tiers.
  • White-label options for agencies.
  • Teams support on the King plan.

Where it falls short

  • Slack is gated behind custom enterprise pricing.
  • Message-based limits tighten once AI replies count.
  • Not built primarily for internal employee support.

Best for: businesses whose main bot is customer-facing on WhatsApp or the web and who need Slack only at enterprise scale.

7. Zapier: connect Slack to everything else

Zapier is the default way to move data between Slack and thousands of other apps: post a Slack message when a form is submitted, create a ticket from a Slack reaction, alert a channel when a deal closes. It is automation, not conversation. On the free plan, Zaps are two-step and check for new data every 15 minutes, which is fine for notifications and too slow for a chat.

Zapier also sells Chatbots and Agents as separate add-ons with their own free tiers; neither draws from your task allowance. We did not find documentation that Zapier Chatbots can be published as a Slack bot, so treat Zapier as the plumbing behind a Slack bot rather than the bot itself.

What we checkedAs listed on 3 November 2026
Free plan100 tasks a month, two-step Zaps, 15-minute polling
Professional$29.99 a month billed monthly, $19.99 billed annually (750 tasks)
SlackTriggers and actions
Chatbots / AgentsSeparate add-ons with free tiers

Where it is strong

  • Thousands of app connections.
  • Very easy to set up notifications into Slack.
  • Good companion to any chatbot for back-office steps.

Where it falls short

  • Not a conversational builder.
  • Free plan polling delay rules out real-time replies.
  • Task-based pricing grows with every automated message.

Best for: routing notifications and data into and out of Slack, alongside whichever bot you choose.

8. n8n: self-hostable automation with a Slack trigger

n8n is an open-source, self-hostable workflow tool with a Slack trigger and Slack nodes, plus AI nodes for building retrieval and agent pipelines. Engineering teams use it to build internal Slack assistants that call internal APIs, with data staying on their own infrastructure.

What we checkedAs listed on 3 November 2026
Self-hostedA standard self-hosted version is available on GitHub
CloudStarter €20 a month (2,500 executions), Pro €50 a month (10,000), billed annually
SlackTrigger and action nodes
Pricing unitWorkflow executions

Where it is strong

  • Self-hosting for data control.
  • Flexible AI and API steps.
  • Strong for internal tooling that acts on Slack events.

Where it falls short

  • You build the conversation logic, state and escalation yourself.
  • Each message is an execution on cloud plans.
  • Self-hosting means owning uptime and updates.

Best for: engineering and ops teams building Slack automations or internal assistants on their own infrastructure.

9. Bolt: Slack's own framework, if you write code

Bolt is Slack's official framework for JavaScript, Python and Java. It handles request verification, events, interactivity, slash commands, OAuth installation and Socket Mode, and it is how most serious Slack apps are built. Writing your own bot gives you every Slack surface, including slash commands, modals, the App Home tab and workflow steps.

The cost is the rest of the system: hosting, token storage, rotation, retries on rate limits, the AI layer, and any inbox for a person to take over. Our guide to xoxb, xoxp and xapp tokens covers the credential side of a Bolt app.

Where it is strong

  • Full Slack feature set, including slash commands and modals.
  • No platform fee.
  • The right choice for a Slack app you will distribute.

Where it falls short

  • You own hosting, security, tokens and scaling.
  • AI answers and escalation are separate projects.
  • Every other channel is another codebase.

Best for: developers building a Slack app as a product, or needing slash commands and modals.

Slack limits every builder inherits

The builder you pick cannot remove Slack's own rules. These cause most of the support tickets after launch:

Limit or ruleWhat happensReference
The bot must be in the channelA bot can only read and post in channels it has been invited to; posting elsewhere fails.not_in_channel
Scopes decide what the bot can doEach API call needs a specific scope; a missing one returns an error until the app is reinstalled with it.missing_scope
Message lengthVery long messages are rejected or truncated, so long AI answers must be split or summarised.msg_too_long
Rate limitsWeb API methods are rate limited by tier, and posting is limited per channel; bursts return 429.Slack limits
Revoked or rotated tokensUninstalling the app or rotating credentials invalidates tokens instantly.token_revoked
DMs need the Messages tabIf the app's Messages tab is off, users cannot DM the bot.messages_tab_disabled
Events need a verified URLEvent Subscriptions only start after Slack's URL verification challenge succeeds.url_verification

Two of these trip up no-code tools more than code: the bot not being invited to the channel, and the Messages tab. If your bot answers in DMs but ignores a channel, invite it. If people cannot find how to message it, check the Messages tab in the app's App Home settings. Our Slack bot not responding guide walks through the full diagnostic order, and the Slack error directory lists every API error with its fix.

How to choose

Pick by the job the bot does:

If your Slack bot is mainly for...ShortlistWhy
IT and HR questions answered from your documentsConferbot, BotpressKnowledge-base AI with a person to escalate to
Forms, approvals and scheduled postsSlack Workflow BuilderNative, no extra tool on paid Slack

Notifications from other apps into SlackZapier, n8nAutomation is the core product
Deep event handling and proactive messagesBotpress, BoltRich Slack event support
A distributable Slack app with slash commandsBoltFull Slack platform access

Before you commit, confirm three things: whether the tool needs a paid Slack plan, whether it supports DMs and channel mentions in the way your employees will actually use it, and how a question the bot cannot answer reaches a person. That last point decides whether employees trust the bot after the first week.

For ready-made starting points, the Slack chatbot templates cover helpdesk, onboarding and FAQ flows.

Where a Slack bot earns its place

Slack bots pay off where the same questions arrive every day in channels: IT access requests, password resets, benefits and leave policies, where-is-the-doc questions, and onboarding checklists. Answering those in the place employees already work removes a ticket form from the journey and gets a person involved only when it matters.

Department examples: Slack bots for tech teams, for HR, for government and for manufacturing. For the business case in depth, read Slack chatbots for business, Slack IT support bots and, if you run both Slack and Teams, Slack and Teams bots for employee support.

The measure that matters is how many questions get answered without a ticket and how quickly the rest reach the right person. Concepts like deflection rate and human handoff are worth agreeing with your team before launch, so you know what good looks like.

Our take

Slack's own tools are excellent at structured workflows and personal AI help. A published help bot that answers employees from your knowledge and hands off cleanly is a different job, and that is where a dedicated builder earns its place.

If that is the bot you need, Conferbot's Slack chatbot connects with one click or with your own Slack app, answers in DMs and mentions with flows or an AI agent trained on your documents through the knowledge base, and hands questions to your team through live chat. The same bot can run on Microsoft Teams and your website. Slack is on every plan, including Free.

Start free with Conferbot - the free plan includes 600 conversations a month and needs no credit card, so you can have the same flow running on a second channel this afternoon.

Best Slack Chatbot Builders Compared FAQ

Everything you need to know about chatbots for best slack chatbot builders compared.

Popular:

It depends on the job. For an AI help bot that answers employees from your documents with a person to escalate to, Conferbot or Botpress. For forms and approvals, Slack's Workflow Builder on paid plans. For notifications, Zapier or n8n. For a distributable Slack app with slash commands, Slack's Bolt framework.

Yes. On 3 November 2026, Conferbot's free plan included Slack with 600 conversations a month, Botpress offered 100 conversations, Flow XO 100 interactions and Zapier 100 tasks. Bolt and a self-hosted n8n are free to run on your own hosting. Slack's Workflow Builder is not on Slack's free plan.

Not really. It runs fixed sequences of steps, such as a form, an approval and a message. It does not hold a free-text conversation or answer questions from a knowledge base. Many teams pair it with a chatbot for open-ended questions.

Yes, apps and bots can be installed on Slack's free plan. Workflow Builder and ongoing Slackbot AI access are features of paid Slack plans, so check which Slack features a tool depends on before assuming the free plan is enough.

Not always. Some builders, including Conferbot and Botpress, offer a one-click authorize flow using their own Slack app. If your security team wants an app you control, both also support your own app from a manifest, where you paste a bot token and signing secret.

Usually the bot has not been invited to that channel, or the app lacks the scope to read channel messages. Invite the bot with /invite and check the app's event subscriptions. If it answers DMs but not channels, it is almost always the invitation.

Yes, with a builder that supports a knowledge base. Conferbot and Botpress let you upload documents or add web pages for the AI to answer from. Keep the documents current, because the bot can only be as accurate as its sources.

Yes, if the builder supports both. Conferbot runs the same flow and knowledge base on Slack and Teams, so you maintain one bot. Code frameworks and Slack's own tools are specific to Slack.

Some can. Conferbot hands the conversation to a person in its shared inbox on every plan, and the flow can resume afterwards. Automation tools such as Zapier can notify a person, but they do not provide a conversation inbox.

From $0 to enterprise pricing. Free plans exist on several builders. Paid entry points we saw on 3 November 2026 ranged from about $19 to $150 a month, plus your Slack seats. Count conversations or tasks, not just seats, when you estimate.

Typically chat:write to post, plus history or message scopes for the conversations it reads, such as im:history for DMs and channels:history for channels. Builders using their own app request these for you; with your own app you add them in OAuth and Permissions.

Use Bolt when the Slack app is a product, or you need slash commands, modals and App Home. Use a no-code builder when the goal is answering employees quickly with AI and human handover, and you would rather not host and maintain the code.
