Intercom vs Zendesk (2026)

Both charge per seat and then meter AI. Intercom's seats run $29 to $132 and every Fin AI outcome costs $0.99; it is the stronger choice for in-app, product-led support with an AI agent answering first. Zendesk's suites run $55 to $115 per agent (annual) with a few automated resolutions included and $2.00 each after; it is the stronger choice for high-volume, multi-channel ticketing with voice and routing. Product-led SaaS leans Intercom; large omnichannel support teams lean Zendesk.

Prices and product status verified 3 November 2026. We build a competing product (Conferbot) - where it appears below, it is labeled.

Intercom and Zendesk are the two default answers when a growing company asks which customer service platform to buy. Both have a help desk, live chat, a knowledge base, an AI agent, a copilot for human agents and hundreds of integrations. In 2026 the comparison is less about features than about how each one charges for AI on top of seats, and which kind of support organisation each is built for.

Intercom has also been rebranding around its AI agent, Fin, with much of its AI content now on fin.ai, while the help desk is still sold on intercom.com. Prices below are from each vendor's pricing page on the date at the top.

Seats plus AI: how each bill is built

Intercom on 3 November 2026: Essential at $29 per seat (the page also shows $19 next to a "New customers save 35%" note), Advanced at $85 and Expert at $132, with a minimum of one full seat. Advanced includes 20 free lite seats and Expert 50. The Fin AI agent costs $0.99 per outcome on any plan; used with another help desk, Fin has a minimum monthly commitment (for example 50 outcomes). Live chat, email and in-app messages are included; WhatsApp, SMS, phone and email campaigns are charged per use. Add-ons: Copilot at $29 per agent a month annually or $35 monthly, a Pro add-on from $100 a month, and Proactive Support Plus at $99 a month for 500 messages.

Zendesk on the same date: Support Team at $19 per agent a month annually or $25 monthly; Suite Team at $55 or $69; Suite Professional at $115 or $149; Suite Enterprise through sales. AI agents include 5 automated resolutions per agent a month on Support Team and Suite Team and 10 on Suite Professional; beyond that, pay-as-you-go resolutions are $2.00 each, with a lower committed rate (the page listed it in pounds, £1.30). Copilot is $50 per agent a month, paid yearly, on Professional and up.

The bill for three support teams

List prices from 3 November 2026, annual billing where offered, before channel usage fees.

5 agents, 1,000 AI-resolved conversations a month

Intercom Advanced: 5 x $85 = $425 + 1,000 x $0.99 = $1,415. Zendesk Suite Team: 5 x $55 = $275, with 25 resolutions included and 975 x $2.00 = $1,950, for $2,225. Intercom is cheaper when the AI does a lot of the work.

20 agents, 300 AI resolutions, heavy phone and email

Intercom Advanced: 20 x $85 = $1,700 + 300 x $0.99 = about $1,997 plus phone usage. Zendesk Suite Professional: 20 x $115 = $2,300, with 200 resolutions included and 100 x $2.00 = $200, for $2,500, including IVR and skills routing. Close on price; Zendesk's voice and routing depth often decides it here.

2 agents, AI on a budget

Intercom Essential: 2 x $29 = $58 + 200 outcomes x $0.99 = about $256. Zendesk Support Team: 2 x $19 = $38 but no messaging or live chat on that plan; Suite Team at 2 x $55 = $110 + 190 x $2.00 = $490. For small teams both get expensive once AI volume grows.

The AI agents: per outcome vs per resolution

Intercom's Fin charges $0.99 per outcome. Zendesk's AI agents charge per automated resolution at $2.00 pay-as-you-go after the included allowance. The words differ, so read each vendor's definition: what counts, what happens when a customer comes back the next day, and whether a hand-off to a human is billed.

The bigger cost risk is the same on both: AI pricing that scales with success. Every question the bot answers well is billed, so a better knowledge base raises the AI line of the invoice. That is fine when each resolution is cheaper than a human answer, which it usually is, but budget it as a variable cost. Our breakdown of Intercom pricing goes deeper on Fin.

Switching between them

Both vendors and many third-party tools offer ticket migration, so history, users and organisations can move. What has to be rebuilt: macros and saved replies, triggers and automations, AI agent configuration and training sources, help-centre theme and URLs, and every integration. Plan redirects for help-centre articles, or you lose their search traffic.

Running both in parallel for a month on a slice of traffic is the safest way to compare real resolution rates and real AI bills. Our migration guide has a checklist.

Where Conferbot fits (our product, labeled)

Conferbot is not a full help desk on the scale of either. It is an AI chatbot builder with a shared inbox: an AI agent trained on your content through the AI knowledge base answers first on your website and messaging channels, and hands over to a person in live chat; it also has a ticket system for follow-ups.

The difference is the pricing shape: per conversation, with AI answering part of the plan rather than billed per outcome. Free includes 600 conversations a month; paid plans are $19, $39 and $59 for 2,000, 5,000 and 10,000, with 3, 5 and 15 team seats. It suits small and mid-size teams that want an AI front line without per-resolution fees. Large contact centres that need IVR, workforce management and deep routing should stay with Zendesk or Intercom.

Questions to ask each vendor

For Intercom

  • "Define a Fin outcome. Is a hand-off to a person billed?"
  • "Is Essential $29 or $19 for us, and for how long?"
  • "What do WhatsApp and phone cost per unit in our countries?"

For Zendesk

  • "What is the committed resolution rate in USD, and the minimum commitment?"
  • "Which channels are on Suite Team versus Professional for our workflow?"
  • "Is Copilot available monthly, or annual only?"

How this comparison was verified

Seat prices, AI pricing, included allowances, channel availability and add-ons were read from intercom.com/pricing and zendesk.com/pricing on 3 November 2026. Intercom's page did not label which Essential price applied to which billing cycle, and Zendesk listed its committed resolution rate in pounds next to USD seat prices; both are flagged. Worked examples use list prices and assume the AI volumes stated. We did not run either platform in production for this page. Corrections are welcome via contact. Disclosure: Conferbot is our product, and its section is labeled.

Frequently asked questions

Is Intercom or Zendesk cheaper?

It depends on how much the AI does. With heavy AI use, Intercom is usually cheaper because Fin costs $0.99 per outcome against Zendesk's $2.00 per automated resolution after the allowance. With many agents and little AI, Zendesk's lower seat prices (Support Team from $19, Suite Team $55) can win.

How much does Intercom cost in 2026?

Can I use Fin with Zendesk?

Intercom sells Fin for use with an existing help desk, with a minimum monthly commitment such as 50 outcomes, according to its pricing page.

How hard is it to migrate from Zendesk to Intercom?

Ticket history can be migrated with vendor or third-party tools. Macros, automations, AI configuration, help-centre content and integrations must be rebuilt, and help-centre URLs should be redirected to keep search traffic.

Do Intercom and Zendesk charge for WhatsApp?

What are alternatives to Intercom and Zendesk?
