The conversational AI market at a glance
34 statistics on the size, spending and investment behind conversational AI: chatbots, voice and AI agents. Market sizes come from research firms' public summaries, spending from Gartner's forecasts and investment from the Stanford AI Index. Every row links to its source.
| Statistic | What it says | Source |
|---|---|---|
| $17.05 billion | conversational AI market in 2025 | MarketsandMarkets |
| $9.6 billion | chatbot market in 2025, projected at $41.2B by 2033 | Grand View Research |
| $29.2 billion | spending on AI agents and assistants in 2026 | Gartner, Sep 2026 |
| $2.67 trillion | total worldwide AI spending in 2026, up 49.5% | Gartner, Sep 2026 |
| $285.9 billion | U.S. private AI investment in 2025 | Stanford AI Index, 2026 |
| 210% | growth in spending on domain-specific GenAI models in 2026 | Gartner, Jul 2026 |
Read market numbers as ranges, not facts. Each firm draws the boundary differently: one counts chatbots, another includes voice assistants and platforms, Gartner counts what buyers spend. They disagree on size and agree on direction: roughly 20% annual growth for the conversational AI category, much faster for agents.

MarketsandMarkets sizes conversational AI at $17.05 billion in 2026, up from $13.77 billion in 2026, with 19.6% annual growth through its forecast period. Its page labels the $49.80 billion endpoint as both 2030 and 2031, which is why we quote the 2031 headline. Grand View Research's narrower chatbot market is $9.6 billion in 2026, also growing at 19.6% a year.
Both firms put North America first, at 31.3% (Grand View, chatbots) and 33.62% (MarketsandMarkets, conversational AI), and both point to customer service as the biggest application. MarketsandMarkets expects generative AI agents to be the fastest-growing technology segment at 25.5% a year.
AI spending: where the money goes
| Statistic | What it measures | Source |
|---|---|---|
| $2.67 trillion | Worldwide AI spending forecast for 2026, up 49.5% from $1.79 trillion in 2025 | Gartner forecast, Sep 2026 |
| $3.64 trillion | Worldwide AI spending forecast for 2027 | Gartner forecast, Sep 2026 |
| $1.48 trillion | AI infrastructure spending in 2026, the largest single category | Gartner forecast, Sep 2026 |
| $576 billion | AI services spending in 2026 | Gartner forecast, Sep 2026 |
| $462 billion | AI software spending in 2026 | Gartner forecast, Sep 2026 |
| $29.2 billion | Spending on AI agents and assistants in 2026, up from $16.5 billion in 2025 | Gartner forecast, Sep 2026 |
| $65.5 billion | Forecast spending on AI agents and assistants in 2027 | Gartner forecast, Sep 2026 |
| $28.3 billion | Spending on generative AI models in 2026, up from $13.0 billion | Gartner forecast, Sep 2026 |
| $1.2 trillion | AI services opportunity Gartner forecasts by 2030 | Gartner forecast, Sep 2026 |
Gartner's September 2026 forecast is the broadest measure: $2.67 trillion of AI spending in 2026, most of it infrastructure. The line closest to conversational AI is agents and assistants, at $29.2 billion in 2026 and $65.5 billion in 2027, which more than doubles. Gartner also notes that buyers are increasingly getting AI from their existing software vendors as embedded features rather than separate projects.
For a business buying a chatbot, that shift shows up as AI agents built into tools you already use, priced per conversation or per resolution. Our chatbot pricing comparison and the chatbot cost calculator help compare the models.
Models and platforms
| Statistic | What it measures | Source |
|---|---|---|
| $64.3 billion | End-user spending on AI models and platforms in 2026, up 63.4% from $39.3 billion | Gartner forecast, Jul 2026 |
| 104.2% | Growth in spending on foundation generative AI models in 2026 | Gartner forecast, Jul 2026 |
| 210% | Growth in spending on domain-specific and specialized GenAI models in 2026 | Gartner forecast, Jul 2026 |
| 38.6% | Growth in AI application development platform spending in 2026 | Gartner forecast, Jul 2026 |
Spending on the models themselves more than doubles in 2026, and spending on domain-specific models triples. That is the trend behind industry-specific assistants and smaller, cheaper models tuned for one job. If you are choosing a model for a chatbot, our guides to choosing an LLM and small language models for chatbots cover the trade-offs, and the AI models directory lists the providers Conferbot can route to.
Investment and adoption
| Statistic | What it measures | Source |
|---|---|---|
| $285.9 billion | U.S. private AI investment in 2025, more than 23 times China's $12.4 billion | Stanford HAI 2026 AI Index, Apr 2026 |
| 1,953 | Newly funded AI companies in the U.S. in 2025, more than 10 times the next country | Stanford HAI 2026 AI Index, Apr 2026 |
| 88% | Organizational AI adoption measured by the 2026 AI Index | Stanford HAI 2026 AI Index, Apr 2026 |
| 53% | Population adoption of generative AI within three years | Stanford HAI 2026 AI Index, Apr 2026 |
| $172 billion | Annual value of generative AI tools to U.S. consumers by early 2026 | Stanford HAI 2026 AI Index, Apr 2026 |
| 12% to ~66% | AI agent task success on the OSWorld computer-use benchmark in one year | Stanford HAI 2026 AI Index, Apr 2026 |
| 362 | Documented AI incidents in 2025, up from 233 in 2024 | Stanford HAI 2026 AI Index, Apr 2026 |
The Stanford AI Index puts U.S. private AI investment at $285.9 billion in 2025, more than 23 times China's, while noting that China's government funds are not fully captured in private figures. Adoption keeps pace: 88% of organizations and 53% of the population within three years. Capability is moving too. On OSWorld, a benchmark of real computer tasks, AI agents went from 12% to about 66% success in a year, though they still fail roughly one in three structured tasks. Documented incidents rose to 362, which is the argument for guardrails and human review.
What the market means for customer service
| Statistic | What it measures | Source |
|---|---|---|
| 50%+ by 2028 | Customer service organizations that will double technology spend | Gartner prediction, Mar 2026 |
| 80% by 2029 | Common customer service issues agentic AI will resolve without a human | Gartner prediction, Mar 2025 |
| 60% by 2028 | Brands using agentic AI for one-to-one customer interactions | Gartner prediction, Jan 2026 |
| 1 million+ | Businesses using Meta Business Agents every week (Q2 2026) | Meta Q2 2026 earnings call, Jul 2026 |
| 1 billion+ | Monthly actives using Meta AI | Meta Q3 2025 earnings call, Oct 2025 |
Customer service is where most of this spending meets customers. Gartner expects agentic AI to resolve 80% of common service issues without a person by 2029, and more than half of service organizations to double technology spend by 2028. Meta already counts over a million businesses using its Business Agents weekly. The detail is in our AI customer service statistics, and the consumer side is in chatbot statistics 2026.

How to read market size numbers
- Check the definition. Chatbots, conversational AI, AI agents and total AI spending are different markets. Never add them together.
- Check the base year. Research firms revise their figures every year; a 2023 estimate and a 2026 estimate of the same market can differ by billions.
- Prefer spending forecasts for budgets. Gartner's numbers measure what buyers spend, which is closer to what a business decision looks like than a vendor revenue estimate.
- Treat growth rates as direction. A 19.6% CAGR means the category is growing fast, not that your costs or results will follow that curve.
Terms used in market reports
| Metric | What it means and how to read it |
|---|---|
| Conversational AI | The broad category: chatbots, voice assistants and AI agents that talk with people. |
| Chatbot | The narrower category Grand View measures: text bots on websites, apps and messaging. |
| AI agent | Software that acts on requests. Gartner's agents and assistants line is the closest spending measure. |
| Agentic AI | AI that plans and completes multi-step tasks, the fastest-growing segment in every report here. |
| Large language model | The models behind modern chatbots. Gartner's model spending figures measure these. |
| AI agent orchestration | Coordinating several agents or tools, which drives platform spending. |
| Model Context Protocol | A standard for connecting AI agents to tools and data, part of the platform layer. |
How the spending breaks down
Gartner's September 2026 table, rearranged by share of the 2026 total of $2.67 trillion:
| Category | 2026 spending | Approximate share |
|---|---|---|
| AI infrastructure | $1.48 trillion | 56% |
| AI services | $576 billion | 22% |
| AI software | $462 billion | 17% |
| AI cybersecurity | $51 billion | 2% |
| AI agents and assistants | $29.2 billion | 1% |
| Generative AI models | $28.3 billion | 1% |
| AI platforms for data science and ML | $26.4 billion | 1% |
| AI application development platforms | $9.5 billion | under 1% |
Shares are our calculation from Gartner's table and are rounded. The point they make: the visible part of conversational AI, the agents and assistants businesses buy, is a small slice of a market dominated by data centers and services. It is also the slice growing fastest into 2027.
Forecast revisions during 2026
Gartner revised its 2026 AI spending forecast upward through the year, which is itself a data point about how fast budgets moved:
| Forecast | 2026 total | Growth stated |
|---|---|---|
| January 2026 | $2.52 trillion | 44% |
| May 2026 | $2.59 trillion | 47% |
| September 2026 | $2.67 trillion | 49.5% |

Widely quoted numbers we left out, and why
Market research is the easiest data to misquote. Things we chose not to use:
| Figure you may see elsewhere | Why it is not in our table |
|---|---|
| An older MarketsandMarkets estimate of $13.2 billion in 2024 growing 24.9% a year to $49.9 billion by 2030 | Superseded by the firm's current page, which shows $13.77 billion in 2024 and 19.6% growth. |
| Grand View Research's separate conversational AI figure ($11.6 billion in 2024) | A different scope from its chatbot report; mixing the two would double count. |
| Market sizes attributed to research firms on other sites | Only used when we could open the firm's own page and find the figure. |
For buying decisions, compare actual pricing instead: the chatbot pricing comparison and Intercom pricing breakdown show what tools cost today.
How we sourced these market statistics
Market sizes come from MarketsandMarkets' and Grand View Research's public report summaries, which are the free portions of paid reports. Spending forecasts come from Gartner press releases, including their full tables. Investment and adoption figures come from the 2026 Stanford AI Index. We did not use market figures attributed to research firms on other websites unless we could open the firm's own page and find the number there.
