Tone

Tone and form of address

The widget's built-in labels use the informal je: "Typ een bericht...", "Bedankt voor je feedback!". That is standard for chat in the Netherlands and increasingly common in Flanders.

Banks, insurers, government and healthcare often still write u. Write your greeting and flows with u and add one line to the agent's instructions if that is your house style.

An instruction you can give the AI agent:

Spreek de klant aan met u en antwoord vriendelijk en kort. Gebruik Belgisch-Nederlandse woorden als de klant uit Vlaanderen schrijft.
  • Dutch customers value directness: lead with the answer, then the detail.
  • Be consistent with je or u and the matching jouw or uw.
  • Keep dates and prices in the Dutch format in your knowledge base (03-11-2026, € 1.234,56); the agent repeats them as written.
Regions

Regional differences in Dutch

  • Netherlands: je is the norm in chat; prices like € 1.234,56.
  • Flanders: different everyday words (gsm for mobile phone, tof for nice) and a softer tone; many visitors also speak French.
  • Belgium overall: one bot can serve Dutch and French speakers, because the AI answers each in their own language.
  • Suriname: Dutch is the official language; prices in SRD.

Write dates and prices in your knowledge base the way your customers expect them. Words such as hallo, bedankt, prijs, openingstijden, hoe, graag tell the AI a message is in Dutch; for a one-word first message it uses the visitor's browser language as a hint.

FAQ

Dutch chatbot: common questions

Does the widget use je or u?

The widget's built-in labels use je. For a formal brand, write your greeting and flows with u and tell the agent to use u.

Can one bot serve both Dutch and French speakers in Belgium?

Yes for AI answers, which follow the language each visitor writes. With the widget language on Automatic, the labels follow the browser too.

Does it understand Flemish?

Yes. Flemish is Dutch, and the AI reads and answers it. Add Flemish product terms to the knowledge base if your customers use them.

Does my knowledge base need to be in Dutch?

No. The agent answers in Dutch from English content too, but Dutch content gives the most natural wording.
