The answer up front: 8 BigCommerce chatbots compared
BigCommerce has no chatbot of its own, so chat comes from an App Marketplace app or a script you add in Script Manager. On the marketplace, Gorgias has the best rating with a meaningful number of reviews, LiveChat and Tidio are the other established names, and several AI tools have listings with no reviews yet. For one bot that answers on your storefront and on WhatsApp, Messenger and Telegram, with the signed-in shopper recognized, Conferbot installs through the Scripts API.
The table shows each app's BigCommerce App Marketplace rating and review count on 3 November 2026, with prices from each vendor's own pricing page that day.
| App | What it is | Marketplace rating (reviews) | Free option | Paid from |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Conferbot (our product) | Hosted AI chatbot + live chat, one bot for web and messaging apps | Listing not live yet | Yes, 600 conversations/month | $19/month |
| Gorgias | Ecommerce helpdesk with chat and an AI Agent add-on | 4.6 (29) | Free trial | $10/month (50 tickets) |
| LiveChat | Live chat with AI features, by Text | 4.0 (27) | 14-day trial | $25 per seat/month, $19 billed yearly |
| Tidio | Live chat, helpdesk, Lyro AI agent | 3.5 (23) | Yes | $24.17/month billed yearly |
| Social Intents | Live chat answered in Teams or Slack, with an AI chatbot | 3.8 (5) | 14-day trial | $21/month billed yearly (Lite) |
| Kommunicate | AI agent with human handover | No reviews yet | 30-day trial | $34/month billed yearly |
| Elfsight AI Chatbot | AI chatbot widget | No reviews yet | Yes, 50 messages/month | $5/month billed yearly |
| tawk.to | Free human live chat | No reviews yet | Free | $29/month to remove branding |
The BigCommerce marketplace has far fewer chat reviews than Shopify's, so even the top rating here rests on a few dozen reviews. Treat ratings as a tiebreaker and test on your own store.
How we compared them, and what we did not do
- Ratings and review counts come from each app's BigCommerce App Marketplace page on 3 November 2026.
- Prices come from each vendor's pricing page on the same date.
- Features come from vendor documentation and listings.
- Conferbot is our product. Its entry follows our BigCommerce app repository and plan limits, and it is listed first because this is our site.
We did not benchmark AI answers or page speed on a demo store. Both depend on your catalog content and your Stencil theme. The test plan below shows how to compare two apps on your own storefront.
How chat gets onto a BigCommerce store
Chat apps either register a script for you through BigCommerce's Scripts API when you install them, or give you a snippet to add yourself in Script Manager. BigCommerce's Script Manager help article describes the settings that matter:
| Setting | Options | For a chat widget |
|---|---|---|
| Location on page | Head or Footer | Footer |
| Select pages | Storefront pages (all except checkout and order confirmation), or All pages (including checkout, order confirmation and cart) | Storefront pages, unless the vendor supports checkout |
| Script category | Essential, Functional, Analytics, or Targeting and Advertising | Functional is typical for chat |
Checkout scripts only work with Optimized One-Page Checkout, and on multi-storefront stores, Script Manager lives under each storefront in Channel Manager. To add a snippet yourself:
- Go to Storefront, then Script Manager, and click Create a Script.
- Name it, set Location to Footer and pages to Storefront pages.
- Choose Script type: Script, paste the snippet, and save.
- Open the store in a private window to check, and clear any storefront cache.
Headless storefronts are different: Scripts API scripts do not run on a headless front end, so paste the vendor's snippet into the front end itself. BigCommerce's developer documentation covers manually installing scripts on its Catalyst storefront. Our BigCommerce chatbot install guide walks through both cases.

The 8 apps, one by one
1. Conferbot (our product)
A hosted AI chatbot and live chat platform. One bot, with flows and an AI agent trained on your pages and files, answers on your storefront and on WhatsApp, Messenger and Telegram if you connect them, with one shared inbox.
- Free plan: 600 conversations a month, 2 chatbots, 2 team members.
- Paid plans from $19/month; native integrations need Pro.
- The app registers the widget through BigCommerce's Scripts API (footer, all storefront pages, functional consent category) and removes it on uninstall.
- On Stencil storefronts, a signed-in shopper's ID and email reach the chat, verified through BigCommerce's Current Customer API.
Strengths: One bot for every channel, signed-in shoppers recognized, live chat handover on every plan.
Trade-offs: The marketplace listing is not live yet; until it is, Conferbot support sends an install link, or you add the snippet in Script Manager. It does not sync your catalog or orders.
Best for: Stores that also sell or support customers on messaging apps.
Installing it on this platform: Install link from Conferbot support, or Script Manager with the snippet. The BigCommerce chatbot page has the details.
2. Gorgias
An ecommerce helpdesk that puts chat, email and social messages into tickets, with order details and actions beside each conversation and an AI Agent add-on.
- 4.6 stars from 29 reviews, the strongest rating here.
- Starter $10/month with 50 tickets and $0.40 per additional ticket; Basic $60/month with 300 tickets.
- The AI Agent is an add-on.
Strengths: Built for ecommerce support teams; order context in the helpdesk.
Trade-offs: Ticket-based billing and an AI add-on; more than a small store needs.
Best for: Stores with a support team handling refunds and order changes.
Installing it on this platform: Install from the App Marketplace and enable the chat widget.
3. LiveChat
One of the longest-running live chat products, now part of Text, with AI features for agents.
- 4.0 stars from 27 reviews.
- $25 per seat a month, or $19 billed yearly.
- 14-day free trial.
Strengths: Polished agent experience, mature integrations.
Trade-offs: Per-seat pricing; AI assists agents rather than replacing them.
Best for: Stores staffed to answer chats during business hours.
Installing it on this platform: Install from the App Marketplace.
4. Tidio
Live chat, a helpdesk and the Lyro AI agent.
- 3.5 stars from 23 reviews on BigCommerce.
- Free plan available; Starter $24.17/month billed yearly.
- Lyro AI from $32.50/month.
Strengths: Free plan, AI and live chat in one product.
Trade-offs: Lower rating on BigCommerce than on other platforms; AI billed separately.
Best for: Small stores that want a free start.
Installing it on this platform: Install from the App Marketplace.

- 14-day free trial; AI chatbot runs on ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini.
Strengths: No new inbox for your team to watch.
Trade-offs: Few reviews; AI conversation caps per plan.
Best for: Teams that live in Teams or Slack all day.
Installing it on this platform: Install from the App Marketplace.
6. Kommunicate
An AI agent platform with human handover, live chat and a codeless bot builder.
- No reviews on its BigCommerce listing yet.
- Starter $40/month or $34 billed yearly, with 250 conversations.
- 30-day free trial; no free plan.
Strengths: AI-first with handover and channels including WhatsApp and Telegram.
Trade-offs: No marketplace reviews to judge by; a higher entry price.
Best for: Stores that want an AI agent with support-team features.
Installing it on this platform: Install from the App Marketplace.
7. Elfsight AI Chatbot
An AI chatbot widget trained on your site, from Elfsight's widget library.
- No reviews on BigCommerce yet.
- Free: 50 AI messages and 200 views a month; Basic $5/month billed yearly.
- Lists BigCommerce among supported platforms.
Strengths: Very low price and quick setup.
Trade-offs: Message and view caps; no shared live chat inbox.
Best for: Small stores wanting simple AI answers.
Installing it on this platform: Install from the App Marketplace or add the embed in Script Manager.
8. tawk.to
Free human live chat with unlimited agents.
- No reviews on its BigCommerce listing yet.
- Free; $29/month to remove branding.
- AI features are paid add-ons.
Strengths: Free, with no seat limits.
Trade-offs: Built for people answering, not an AI-first bot.
Best for: Stores with staff available to chat.
Installing it on this platform: Install from the App Marketplace or add the widget code in Script Manager.
What each app can see in your store
The real difference between BigCommerce chat apps is their access to store data:
| Level | What the chat knows | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Content | Product, shipping and policy pages you train it on | Conferbot, Elfsight, Kommunicate, Tidio's Lyro |
| Shopper | Who the signed-in customer is | Conferbot (ID and email via the Current Customer API on Stencil) |
| Orders and actions | Order history, refunds and edits beside the conversation | Gorgias |
Match this to your inbox. If "where is my order" dominates, a helpdesk with order access is worth its cost. If questions are about products, shipping and returns, a content-trained AI agent handles them, and order questions can go to a person with the customer already identified. The order tracking template shows how to collect an order number politely before handover.
B2B and multi-storefront stores
BigCommerce is popular for B2B and multi-brand selling, which changes the requirements:
- Multi-storefront. Script Manager is per storefront in Channel Manager, so each storefront can run a different bot, greeting or language. Decide whether brands share one inbox or not.
- B2B buyers ask about bulk pricing, quotes, payment terms and lead times. Route quote requests to sales with the company and quantity captured; the lead qualification guide has question sets that do not feel like a form.
- Signed-in accounts. When the chat knows who the buyer is, your team can see their account without asking. Conferbot passes the signed-in shopper on Stencil storefronts.
For larger operations, our guide to chatbots for Shopify Plus and BigCommerce enterprise stores covers routing, SLAs and multi-brand inboxes.
Consent categories and cookie banners
Script Manager asks you to put every script in a consent category. Chat is usually Functional, which has a practical effect: shoppers who decline functional cookies will not see the chat. Conferbot's app registers its script in the Functional category for that reason. Test your store with the cookie banner accepted and declined, and mention the chat tool in your privacy policy. The chatbot GDPR guide covers what to say and how long to keep chat data.
Choosing by store size
| Store | Typical chat volume | Sensible starting point |
|---|---|---|
| New or small store | A few chats a day, owner answers | A free plan: tawk.to for human chat, or Tidio, Elfsight or Conferbot for AI with handover |
| Growing store with one or two support people | Dozens of chats a day, repeat questions | An AI agent that clears the repeats, with live chat handover and a shared inbox |
| Established store with a support team | Hundreds of tickets a week across channels | A helpdesk such as Gorgias, with chat feeding tickets and AI for first replies |
| B2B or multi-storefront | Quotes, accounts, several brands | Per-storefront bots, sales routing and signed-in buyers recognized |
The common mistake is buying for the store you hope to be. A helpdesk priced per ticket is a poor fit for a store that gets ten chats a day, and a free widget will not survive a holiday peak. Start where you are and plan the next step, which is usually adding seats or an integration rather than switching tools.
What to train a BigCommerce bot on
For an AI agent, the content you give it decides the quality of its answers. Before launch, make sure these exist on your store and are linked from the bot's sources:
- Shipping zones, costs and delivery times, by region if they differ.
- Returns and exchanges, including who pays return shipping and how long refunds take.
- Sizing, compatibility or materials for your main product lines.
- Payment options, including B2B terms if you offer them.
- Contact details and hours for anything the bot hands over.
Then ask it the questions your inbox actually gets and fill the gaps. Our guide to training a chatbot on a knowledge base covers the process, and the AI knowledge base explains how Conferbot learns from your pages and files.
Switching from another chat app
Moving between chat apps on BigCommerce is mostly about not ending up with two widgets and not losing history:
- Export conversation history and contacts from the old tool if you need them.
- Uninstall the old app, which removes the script it registered, or delete its Script Manager entry if you added it by hand.
- Clear the storefront cache and confirm the old launcher is gone in a private window.
- Install the new app or snippet, then rebuild your top flows and greetings.
- Point any links in emails or your help pages at the new chat.
Our chatbot migration guide covers moving flows and training content between platforms in more detail.
Measuring whether chat pays for itself
A month after launch, look past the number of chats:
| Number | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| Orders placed after a chat | Whether chat helps people buy; compare order rates for shoppers who chatted and those who did not |
| Deflection rate | Questions answered without a ticket or email |
| Handovers and their first response time | Whether shoppers wait too long for a person |
| Top unanswered questions | What to add to the bot's content next |
Review a sample of conversations each week for the first month; it is the fastest way to find wrong answers and missing content. Chatbot analytics covers the dashboard side.
Multi-currency and multilingual stores
Stores that sell in several countries need the chat to keep up. Three things to check:
- Language. Does the bot answer in the shopper's language, and can the widget's own text (greeting, buttons, placeholder) be translated? AI agents usually answer in the language they are asked in, but fixed flow text needs translating.
- Per-storefront setup. On multi-storefront stores, each storefront's Script Manager can load a bot set up for that market.
- Policies by region. Shipping and returns differ by country, so give the bot region-specific pages and make it ask where the shopper is before answering.
The multilingual chatbot guide covers translation and language detection, our note on what breaks in multilingual chatbots lists the common failures, and the multilingual support template is a starting point.
Questions to put to a vendor before installing
- Does your app register its own script, and does uninstalling remove it?
- Which pages does it run on, and does it need checkout access?
- Which consent category does the script use?
- Can it identify a signed-in shopper, and how is that verified?
- Does it read catalog or order data, or only page content?
- How is AI usage counted, and what happens when the allowance runs out?
- Does it work on a headless storefront, and how?
- Can we export conversations and contacts if we leave?
Vendors that answer these clearly tend to be easier to live with. If an answer is vague, test that point first on your store.
What a BigCommerce chatbot really costs
| Model | Example here | What drives the bill |
|---|---|---|
| Conversation allowance | Conferbot from $19/month | Conversations per month |
| Per ticket | Gorgias $10 for 50 tickets, then $0.40 each | Support volume |
| Per seat | LiveChat $19 to $25 per seat a month | Team size |
| Per seat with AI caps | Social Intents, Kommunicate | Seats and AI conversations |
| Message caps | Elfsight from $5/month billed yearly | AI messages and widget views |

How to test two apps on your storefront
- Use a staging or preview theme if you can, or install outside peak hours.
- Give both the same content: shipping, returns, sizing and your top product pages.
- Ask ten real questions from your inbox, two of which need a person.
- Sign in as a customer and check whether the agent sees who you are.
- Check the cookie banner accepted and declined.
- Measure speed on a product page with the script on and off.
Preview a widget on your own page first with the website chatbot preview. If it does not appear, the widget troubleshooting guide lists the usual causes, and on BigCommerce two more: the storefront cache, and a consent category the shopper declined.
Common mistakes on BigCommerce
- Adding the script twice. An app that registers its own script plus a manual Script Manager snippet gives you two launchers.
- Putting chat on checkout without checking. Checkout scripts need Optimized One-Page Checkout, and most chat tools are meant for storefront pages.
- Forgetting headless. Scripts API scripts do not run on headless front ends; add the snippet there.
- Ignoring the consent category. A Functional script is hidden from shoppers who decline it.
- Letting the bot guess order status. Without order access, collect the order number and hand over.
- Auto-opening on product pages. Trigger on intent instead; see the chatbot UI best practices.
Where a BigCommerce chatbot earns its place
Store chat pays off in three places: pre-purchase questions answered before the shopper leaves, repeat support questions answered without a ticket, and B2B enquiries routed to sales with the details already collected. Our analysis of chatbots and sales and the guide to raising average order value look at what actually moves revenue.
Good first flows: a product recommendation quiz, a returns assistant and an abandoned cart flow. See chatbots for ecommerce for more.
Choosing, then avoiding the plumbing
If your work is mostly tickets and order changes, Gorgias is built for it. If you want staffed live chat, LiveChat and Tidio are established. If you want one AI agent and live chat for your storefront and your messaging channels, with signed-in shoppers recognized, Conferbot for BigCommerce does it from one builder with a shared inbox.
