Telegram statistics at a glance
28 Telegram statistics with sources. Telegram is a private company that does not publish audited figures, so the user and revenue numbers are what its founder Pavel Durov has stated publicly; we say so on each row. The bot and platform numbers come from Telegram's own documentation and blog.
| Statistic | What it says | Source |
|---|---|---|
| 1 billion+ | monthly active users | Durov via TASS, Mar 2025 |
| 41 minutes | average daily time per user, opening the app 21 times | Durov via TASS, Mar 2025 |
| 10 million+ | bots on the platform | Telegram docs |
| 500 million+ | users who use mini apps every month | Telegram docs |
| 12 million+ | Premium subscribers at the end of 2024 | Durov via Interfax, Dec 2024 |
| ~30 per second | free bulk sending limit for a bot | Telegram docs |
For businesses, the bot numbers matter more than the headline user count. More than half of Telegram's users touch mini apps every month and the platform hosts over ten million bots, which means Telegram users are unusually comfortable doing things inside a bot: ordering, booking, paying, getting support.
If you run a project community on Telegram, the crypto community support bot guide shows how to keep a busy group answered without flooding it.
Telegram user statistics
| Statistic | What it measures | Source |
|---|---|---|
| 1 billion+ | Monthly active Telegram users, described by Durov as "significantly over" a billion (Mar 2025) | Pavel Durov, reported by TASS, Mar 2025 |
| 21 times a day | Average number of times each user opens Telegram daily | Pavel Durov, reported by TASS, Mar 2025 |
| 41 minutes | Average daily time each user spends in Telegram | Pavel Durov, reported by TASS, Mar 2025 |
| #2 | Telegram's rank among messaging apps worldwide by Durov's count, excluding China-specific WeChat | Pavel Durov, reported by TASS, Mar 2025 |
Durov's March 2025 post put Telegram at significantly over a billion monthly users and called it the second most popular messaging app in the world outside China. The engagement figures in the same post, 21 opens and 41 minutes a day on average, are higher than most people expect from a messenger and reflect how much of Telegram's use happens in channels and groups rather than one-to-one chats.
A note on the many Telegram user counts you will find elsewhere: we found pages quoting 900 million, 950 million and various country breakdowns with no traceable source. Telegram's own Bot Features documentation still refers to 950 million users in its mini app section, which likely predates the billion milestone. We use the founder's dated statement and label it as such.
Telegram revenue, profit and Premium
| Statistic | What it measures | Source |
|---|---|---|
| $1 billion+ | Telegram revenue in 2024, the first year it turned a profit | Pavel Durov, reported by Interfax, Dec 2024 |
| $547 million | Telegram profit in 2024, per Durov | Pavel Durov, reported by TASS, Mar 2025 |
| $500 million+ | Cash reserves at the end of 2024, excluding crypto | Pavel Durov, reported by Interfax, Dec 2024 |
| 12 million+ | Telegram Premium subscribers at the end of 2024, tripled in a year | Pavel Durov, reported by Interfax, Dec 2024 |
2024 was Telegram's first profitable year since it began monetizing, according to Durov's December 2024 post: revenue over $1 billion, Premium subscribers tripled to more than 12 million, and advertising revenue up several times. In March 2025 he put 2024 profit at $547 million. These are company statements without published accounts, so treat them as indicative.
Monetization matters to bot builders because it funds the platform features businesses use: Telegram Stars for digital goods, paid broadcasts for high-volume sending and the Bot API 10 features that keep arriving. Our Telegram bot for business guide covers which of them are worth using.
Telegram bot and mini app statistics
| Statistic | What it measures | Source |
|---|---|---|
| 10 million+ | Bots on Telegram's bot platform, free for users and developers | Telegram Bot Platform page, 2026 |
| 500 million+ of 950 million | Telegram users interacting with mini apps every month, per the Bot Features docs | Telegram Bot Features docs, 2026 |
| 400 million | Users interacting with bots and mini apps monthly when Stars launched in June 2024 | Telegram blog: Stars, Jun 2024 |
| 500 million | Users interacting with mini apps monthly, announced with the Mini App Bar in 2024 | Telegram blog: Mini App Bar, 2024 |
The bot platform is Telegram's real differentiator. It is free for users and developers, has no approval process for a basic bot, and supports full web apps (mini apps) inside the chat. Telegram's own figures show mini app use growing from 400 million monthly users when Stars launched in June 2024 to over 500 million.
Getting a bot running takes minutes: get a token from BotFather, set commands, and connect it to a webhook or a no-code builder. Our guide to building a Telegram bot without coding walks through the whole path, and the free token checker and webhook checker catch the most common setup mistakes.
Telegram Bot API limits that shape every bot
| Limit | What it covers | Source |
|---|---|---|
| About 1 message per second | Messages to a single chat | Telegram Bot API docs, checked Aug 2026 |
| 20 messages per minute | Messages to a single group | Telegram Bot API docs, checked Aug 2026 |
| About 30 messages per second | Bulk notifications (all chats combined) | Telegram Bot API docs, checked Aug 2026 |
| Up to 1000 messages per second | Paid Broadcasts ceiling | Telegram Bot API docs, checked Aug 2026 |
| 1-4,096 characters | Message text (sendMessage, editMessageText) | Telegram Bot API docs, checked Aug 2026 |
| 0-1,024 characters | Media caption length | Telegram Bot API docs, checked Aug 2026 |
| 50 MB | Bot upload size for files (photos 10 MB) | Telegram Bot API docs, checked Aug 2026 |
| 20 MB | Bot download size via getFile | Telegram Bot API docs, checked Aug 2026 |
| 2,000 MB | Upload size with a local Bot API server | Telegram Bot API docs, checked Aug 2026 |
| 1-64 bytes | Callback data on an inline button | Telegram Bot API docs, checked Aug 2026 |
| At most 100 commands | Commands per scope and language | Telegram Bot API docs, checked Aug 2026 |
| 5-32 characters; Latin letters, digits and underscores; must end in 'bot' | Bot username | Telegram Bot API docs, checked Aug 2026 |
| 24 hours | How long Telegram keeps undelivered updates | Telegram Bot API docs, checked Aug 2026 |
| 443, 80, 88, 8443 | Ports allowed for a webhook | Telegram Bot API docs, checked Aug 2026 |
| Less than 48 hours old | Age limit for a bot deleting a message | Telegram Bot API docs, checked Aug 2026 |
| 2-10 items | Items per album | Telegram Bot API docs, checked Aug 2026 |
The sending limits are the ones that surprise new bot owners. About one message per second to a single chat and 20 per minute to a group are soft limits enforced with HTTP 429 and a retry_after value, documented in our 429 Too Many Requests reference. For broadcasts above roughly 30 messages per second, Telegram offers paid broadcasts priced in Stars.
The full list, with every limit linked to Telegram's documentation, is in our Telegram limits reference. When something goes wrong, the Telegram error directory covers each Bot API error, from 401 Unauthorized for a bad token to 409 Conflict when a webhook and getUpdates collide.
What goes wrong with Telegram bots most often
Across our Telegram error pages, a few problems account for most bot failures:
- Silent bot in groups. Privacy mode stops the bot seeing ordinary group messages. Covered in Telegram bot not responding.
- Users who blocked the bot. 403 Forbidden: bot was blocked by the user is normal at scale; stop messaging those users.
- Backlogs after downtime. Telegram keeps undelivered updates for 24 hours; see pending update count.
- Messages too long. Text over 4,096 characters fails with message is too long.
The Telegram Bot API error codes guide lists every error with its fix.
What businesses use Telegram bots for
The usage patterns behind these numbers suggest where a business bot fits on Telegram: customer support in a private chat, community management in groups and channels, commerce through mini apps and Stars, and notifications to people who opted in. Our guides cover Telegram support bots and business use cases, and the Telegram templates are ready-made starting points. The Telegram link generator and keyboard builder help with entry points and buttons.

Telegram terms used here
| Metric | What it means and how to read it |
|---|---|
| Webhook | Telegram pushes updates to your HTTPS endpoint on ports 443, 80, 88 or 8443, instead of your bot polling. |
| Rate limiting | Telegram's soft limits, about 1 message per second per chat, enforced with HTTP 429 and retry_after. |
| Chat API | The Bot API is Telegram's chat API for bots, free and without approval for a basic bot. |
| Chatbot | On Telegram, any bot account that responds to messages, commands or buttons. |
| Human handoff | Moving a Telegram conversation from the bot to a person, usually through a shared inbox. |
| Message template | Not required on Telegram: unlike WhatsApp, bots can message users who started them without pre-approved templates. |
Telegram compared with WhatsApp for business bots
| Telegram | ||
|---|---|---|
| Monthly users | 1 billion+ (Durov, Mar 2025) | 3 billion+ (Meta, Apr 2025) |
| Cost to message users | Free | Per delivered template; replies in the 24-hour window are free |
| Approval to start a bot | None for a basic bot | Business verification and template approval |
| Writing first | Any user who started the bot | Approved templates only, within tier limits |
| Text length | 4,096 characters | 4,096 characters |
| Mini apps | Yes, 500 million+ monthly users | WhatsApp Flows for forms |
Telegram is cheaper and more open; WhatsApp reaches more people in most markets. Many businesses run both from one inbox; see the WhatsApp channel page and WhatsApp statistics.
Widely quoted numbers we left out, and why
Telegram has no annual report, so estimates fill the gap. We excluded:
| Figure you may see elsewhere | Why it is not in our table |
|---|---|
| 900 million, 950 million or 500 million daily user figures dated 2025 or 2026 | Found on statistics sites without a Telegram source. Telegram's own docs still say 950 million in one place, which we mention with that caveat. |
| 15 million Premium subscribers | Reported secondhand; we could not find Durov's original statement. We use his verified 12 million+ figure from December 2024. |
| 2024 revenue of $1.4 billion and profit of $540 million | From press reports of investor documents; they conflict with Durov's own "over $1 billion" and $547 million, which we use. |
| Mini app reach of 1.44 billion in September 2024 | From an ad network's report via aggregators, not from Telegram. |
How we sourced these Telegram statistics
Telegram publishes no annual report. User, revenue and subscriber figures are Durov's own public statements; where we could not open his original post, we cite the news agency that quoted it (TASS and Interfax) and say so. Bot and mini app figures come from Telegram's blog and its Bot Platform and Bot Features documentation. API limits come from the Bot API reference and Bots FAQ, which we check for our limits reference; the last full check was August 2026. We excluded estimates found only on aggregator sites.
