WhatsApp Business in numbers
32 WhatsApp Business statistics, split into two kinds: audience and business numbers that Meta has disclosed in earnings calls and announcements, and the platform rules that decide how a business can actually message people. Every row links to its source.
| Statistic | What it says | Source |
|---|---|---|
| 3 billion+ | monthly WhatsApp users | Meta, Apr 2025 |
| 200 million+ | monthly users of the WhatsApp Business app | Meta, Jun 2023 |
| 1 million+ | businesses using Meta Business Agents each week | Meta, Jul 2026 |
| $1.10 billion | Family of Apps other revenue in Q3 2026, which Meta attributes mainly to WhatsApp paid messaging and subscriptions | Meta, Oct 2026 |
| 250 | unique customers an unverified business can start conversations with per 24 hours | Meta docs |
| 24 hours | customer service window after a customer's last message | Meta docs |
The audience is enormous and the business side is now material to Meta: its "other revenue" line, which Meta says is driven mainly by WhatsApp paid messaging, passed $1 billion a quarter in 2026. The rules are what make WhatsApp different from email or SMS. You can reply freely inside a 24-hour window, but starting a conversation means an approved template and a limit on how many people you can reach per day.
WhatsApp user statistics
| Statistic | What it measures | Source |
|---|---|---|
| 3 billion+ | Monthly WhatsApp users, announced on Meta's Q1 2025 earnings call | Meta Q1 2025 earnings call, reported by Nairametrics, Apr 2025 |
| 200 million+ | Monthly active users of the WhatsApp Business app, up from 50 million in 2020 | Meta, reported by TechCrunch, Jun 2023 |
| 30 million per second | Peak WhatsApp messages sent during the 2026 World Cup Final, an all-time record | Meta Q2 2026 earnings call, Jul 2026 |
| 3.64 billion | Daily active people across Meta's apps, WhatsApp included, in Q3 2026 | Meta Q3 2026 earnings presentation, Oct 2026 |
Meta stopped reporting per-app user numbers quarterly in 2024 and now reports daily active people across Facebook, Instagram, Messenger and WhatsApp combined: 3.64 billion in Q3 2026. Its own Q3 2026 earnings presentation notes the slight dip in Q1 2026 was caused partly by a restriction on WhatsApp in Russia. WhatsApp-specific figures now come from milestones announced on earnings calls, like the 3 billion monthly users in April 2025 and the record of 30 million messages per second during the 2026 World Cup Final.
The WhatsApp Business app figure, 200 million monthly users, is from June 2023 and is the latest Meta has published. It counts the free app for small businesses, not companies on the API. If you are deciding between the two, our guide to the official and unofficial WhatsApp APIs explains the difference.
Business messaging statistics
| Statistic | What it measures | Source |
|---|---|---|
| 1 billion+ | Active threads people have with business accounts across Meta's messaging apps every day | Meta Q3 2025 earnings call, Oct 2025 |
| 1 million+ | Businesses using Meta Business Agents on WhatsApp and Messenger every week (Q2 2026) | Meta Q2 2026 earnings call, Jul 2026 |
| $1 billion+ | Quarterly Family of Apps other revenue in Q2 2026, up 73%, driven primarily by WhatsApp paid messaging and subscriptions | Meta Q2 2026 earnings call, Jul 2026 |
| $1.10 billion | Family of Apps other revenue in Q3 2026, up from $690 million a year earlier | Meta Q3 2026 earnings presentation, Oct 2026 |
| 60% | Year-over-year revenue growth of click-to-WhatsApp ads in Q3 2025 | Meta Q3 2025 earnings call, Oct 2025 |
| 85% | Movida WhatsApp conversations resolved by its business agent without a person | Meta Q2 2026 earnings call, Jul 2026 |
| 44% | Increase in Movida's daily bookings through WhatsApp, year over year | Meta Q2 2026 earnings call, Jul 2026 |
| 3 messages | Fewest messages a returning Movida customer needed to complete a reservation | Meta Q2 2026 earnings call, Jul 2026 |
Meta's earnings calls show where WhatsApp's business side is heading. In Q3 2025 it reported more than a billion active threads with business accounts every day and 60% growth in click-to-WhatsApp ad revenue. By Q2 2026, quarterly other revenue had reached $1 billion for the first time, up 73%, and more than a million businesses were using Meta's Business Agents each week.
The Movida example from the Q2 2026 call is the clearest published result for an AI agent on WhatsApp: 85% of conversations resolved without a person, and a 44% rise in daily WhatsApp bookings. It is one company's result, reported by Meta, but it shows the pattern that works: the whole task, from question to payment, inside one chat. Our WhatsApp chatbot for ecommerce guide shows how to design a flow like that, and the WhatsApp marketing chatbot guide covers click-to-WhatsApp ads.
Messaging limits and throughput
| Limit | What it covers | Source |
|---|---|---|
| 250 unique customers / rolling 24h | Unverified business (starting tier) | Meta WhatsApp developer docs, checked Aug 2026 |
| 2,000 unique customers / rolling 24h | Tier 2 (TIER_2K) | Meta WhatsApp developer docs, checked Aug 2026 |
| 10,000 unique customers / rolling 24h | Tier 3 (TIER_10K) | Meta WhatsApp developer docs, checked Aug 2026 |
| 100,000 unique customers / rolling 24h | Tier 4 (TIER_100K) | Meta WhatsApp developer docs, checked Aug 2026 |
| Next tier within 6 hours once eligible | Automatic upgrade criteria (from 2,000 upward) | Meta WhatsApp developer docs, checked Aug 2026 |
| Up to 80 messages per second per business phone number | Default throughput | Meta WhatsApp developer docs, checked Aug 2026 |
| Up to 1,000 messages per second by automatic upgrade | Upgraded throughput | Meta WhatsApp developer docs, checked Aug 2026 |
| Fixed 20 messages per second | Throughput for WhatsApp Business app numbers using coexistence | Meta WhatsApp developer docs, checked Aug 2026 |
Messaging tiers count unique people you message outside an open customer service window in a rolling 24 hours, at the business portfolio level. New, unverified businesses start at 250; verification and good quality move you up through 2,000, 10,000 and 100,000 to unlimited. Throughput is separate: up to 80 messages per second per number by default, upgradeable to 1,000. Our WhatsApp limits reference lists every limit with links to Meta's docs, and error 130429 is what you see when you exceed throughput.

Since July 1, 2025 WhatsApp charges per delivered template message rather than per conversation. Free-form replies inside the 24-hour window are free, and utility templates sent inside an open window are free too. Meta changed service-window billing again from October 1, 2026; we cover what changed in WhatsApp service message billing from October 2026. For current per-country rates use Meta's rate cards or our WhatsApp API cost calculator.
Templates are where most new businesses get stuck. Our 26 WhatsApp template examples show approved formats, why templates get rejected covers the common refusals, and the free template checker flags problems before you submit.
The problems businesses hit most
Our WhatsApp error code directory is built from Meta's documented error codes, and the same handful come up again and again in support conversations:
- 131047: the 24-hour window has closed, so a free-form message cannot be sent. Use a template.
- 131026: the message could not be delivered to that number.
- 131037: the number needs an approved display name first.
- 133010: the phone number is not registered on the Cloud API.
- 100: an invalid parameter, usually a malformed payload.
Account-level problems are a separate category: see WhatsApp Business account restricted and number registration failed. For the full list with fixes, the WhatsApp API error codes guide is the companion to this page.
What the numbers mean for a business on WhatsApp
- Design for inbound first. Replies inside the 24-hour window are free and unlimited by tier. Click-to-WhatsApp ads and website buttons that start conversations are the cheapest way to grow.
- Verify early. The 250-person starting tier and two-number cap lift with verification, which takes time.
- Treat templates as a product. Approval, quality rating and pacing decide whether outbound works at all.
- Automate the full task. The published results come from bots that complete bookings and orders in the chat, not from bots that point to a website.
Tools that help: the WhatsApp link generator and QR code generator for entry points, and the text formatter for message styling.
WhatsApp Business milestones, in order
- 2020: WhatsApp Business app at 50 million monthly users.
- June 2023: WhatsApp Business app passes 200 million monthly users.
- November 2024: Free-form service messages inside the 24-hour window become free.
- April 2025: WhatsApp passes 3 billion monthly users.
- July 1, 2025: Pricing moves from per-conversation to per delivered template message.
- Q3 2025: Click-to-WhatsApp ad revenue grows 60%; Business AI tests run in Mexico and the Philippines.
- Q2 2026: Meta Business Agents available globally on WhatsApp; other revenue passes $1 billion a quarter; a record 30 million messages per second during the World Cup Final.
- October 1, 2026: Service window billing changes again (see our billing guide).
Each change shifted what a business pays and what it can automate. The WhatsApp chatbot rules for 2026 cover the policy side.
WhatsApp terms used in these statistics
| Metric | What it means and how to read it |
|---|---|
| WhatsApp Business API | The Cloud API businesses use to send and receive messages programmatically, as opposed to the free Business app. |
| Message template | A pre-approved message used to start a conversation or write outside the 24-hour window. |
| Rate limiting | Caps on how fast you can send: 80 messages per second per number by default on WhatsApp. |
| Webhook | How WhatsApp tells your system about incoming messages and delivery statuses. Meta retries failed deliveries for up to 7 days. |
| Conversational commerce | Selling inside the chat, which is what the Movida example shows. |
| Human handoff | Moving a WhatsApp conversation from the bot to a person inside the open window. |
Planning a WhatsApp rollout with these numbers
| Stage | Constraint from the data | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Launch | 250 unique customers per 24 hours until verified; 2 phone numbers | Start with inbound: website button, QR code, click-to-WhatsApp ads |
| Grow | Tiers rise to 2,000, 10,000 and 100,000 with quality | Keep templates useful and opt-in clean to protect quality rating |
| Scale | 80 messages per second per number, up to 1,000 | Batch broadcasts and watch error 130429 |
| Automate | Movida: 85% resolved by an agent | Automate full tasks, not just FAQs, and keep a human path |
Most of the setup questions behind this table are covered in the WhatsApp Business API setup guide.
Widely quoted numbers we left out, and why
WhatsApp is one of the most searched statistics topics, and most of what ranks is unsourced. We excluded:
| Figure you may see elsewhere | Why it is not in our table |
|---|---|
| Country-by-country WhatsApp user counts | Meta does not publish them; the tables online are third-party estimates. |
| A "$510 million" business messaging income figure for one quarter | Reported by a single outlet; Meta's own materials give other revenue figures, which we used instead. |
| Newer WhatsApp Business app user totals than 200 million | We found no Meta statement after June 2023. |
| Open rates of 90%+ for WhatsApp messages | Usually vendor marketing claims without a dataset or method. |
How we sourced these WhatsApp statistics
User and business figures come from Meta's earnings call transcripts and presentations, and from Meta announcements as reported by the press when no first-party page was available (marked "reported by"). Platform rules come from Meta's WhatsApp developer documentation, which we check for our limits reference; the last full check was August 2026. We left out widely circulated figures we could not trace to Meta, including country-level user counts that appear only on aggregator sites.
