The answer up front: 9 AI chatbots for Squarespace compared
On Squarespace, nearly every chatbot installs the same way: you paste the tool's snippet into Code Injection, which Squarespace includes on the Core, Plus and Advanced plans and some legacy plans, but not on Basic. That makes the choice about the tool, not the plugin. For free human chat, tawk.to. For live chat with an AI agent, Tidio, Crisp or Chatway. For an AI agent trained on your content, Chatbase or Elfsight. For one bot that also answers on WhatsApp, Messenger and Telegram, Conferbot.
Squarespace has no app store with chat-app ratings, so the table compares what you can check on each vendor's own pricing page on 3 November 2026: the free option, the lowest paid price and how AI is billed.
| Tool | What it is | Free option | Paid from | How AI is billed |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Conferbot (our product) | Hosted AI chatbot + live chat, one bot for web and messaging apps | Yes, 600 conversations/month | $19/month | Included in the conversation allowance |
| Tidio | Live chat, helpdesk, Lyro AI agent | Yes | $24.17/month billed yearly | Lyro from $32.50/month |
| Crisp | Live chat, shared inbox, Hugo AI agent | Yes | $45/month per workspace | Varies by plan; check Crisp's pricing page |
| Chatway | Live chat, AI agent, WhatsApp and social inbox | Yes, 50 conversations/month | $31/month billed yearly | $0.50 per resolved conversation |
| tawk.to | Free human live chat | Free | $29/month to remove branding | Paid AI add-on |
| Chatbase | AI agent trained on your content | 7-day trial | $40/month | Message credits (700 on Hobby) |
| Elfsight AI Chatbot | AI chatbot widget | Yes, 50 messages/month | $5/month billed yearly | Monthly message cap per plan |
| Intercom | Helpdesk with the Fin AI agent | Free trial | $29 per seat/month billed yearly | Fin at $0.99 per outcome |
| HubSpot | CRM with free live chat and chatbot builder | Yes, with the free CRM | Paid HubSpot tiers | AI features on paid tiers |
Prices are each vendor's own figures on the check date and change often. Several tools bill AI on top of the plan, so read the cost section before comparing the price column.
How we compared them, and what we did not do
- Squarespace requirements come from Squarespace's own code injection help article, checked on 3 November 2026.
- Prices and free plans come from each vendor's pricing page on the same date.
- Features come from vendor documentation, not from our impressions.
- Conferbot is our product. Its entry describes it exactly as our product works, and it is listed first because this is our site, not because of a score.
We did not score AI quality or page speed on a test site. Both depend on your template and your content, so a number from our site would not predict yours. Instead, the test plan below shows how to compare two tools on your own Squarespace site in about an hour, using Squarespace's preview tools to keep it away from visitors.
How chat gets onto a Squarespace site: Code Injection
Squarespace's help center says code injection "is available in the Core, Plus, Advanced, and some legacy billing plans". On a Basic plan, or during the trial for some injection points, you cannot add a chat snippet this way. The places you can inject code are:
| Injection point | Where the code goes | Use it for chat? |
|---|---|---|
| Header | Inside <head> on every page | Only if the vendor asks for it |
| Footer | Before </body> on every page | Yes, the usual place |
| Page header (page settings, Advanced) | Inside <head> of one page | To show chat on a single page only |
| Order confirmation and order status pages | After checkout | Not for chat; for post-purchase tracking |
| Checkout | Not supported | No |
To add a chatbot:
- Copy the snippet from your chat tool. In Conferbot it is under Share, then Embed into your website.
- In Squarespace, open the Code Injection panel (search "code injection" in the dashboard).
- Paste the snippet into the Footer box and save.
- Open the live site in a private window to check, because injected scripts may not behave the same inside the editor preview.
If an injected script ever breaks the editor preview, Squarespace offers Disable Scripts in Preview, or you can add /safe after /config in the editing URL. That only affects your preview, not what visitors see. Our Squarespace chatbot install guide has the full walkthrough with three methods.

The 9 tools, one by one
1. Conferbot (our product)
A hosted AI chatbot and live chat platform. One bot, with flows and an AI agent trained on your pages and files, answers on your Squarespace site and on WhatsApp, Messenger and Telegram if you connect them, with one shared inbox.
- Free plan: 600 conversations a month, 2 chatbots, 2 team members.
- Paid plans from $19/month; removing "Powered by Conferbot" starts on Starter.
- Live chat handover on every plan; native integrations such as Google Sheets or HubSpot need Pro.
Strengths: One bot for every channel, flows and AI in one builder, ready templates for bookings and lead capture.
Trade-offs: Reads your pages and files, not your Squarespace Commerce orders; needs a plan with Code Injection.
Best for: Service businesses, creators and shops whose customers message on several apps.
Installing it on this platform: Footer code injection. The Squarespace chatbot page shows the snippet.
2. Tidio
Live chat, a helpdesk and the Lyro AI agent, widely used on small business sites.
- Free plan available.
- Starter $24.17/month billed yearly.
- Lyro AI from $32.50/month.
Strengths: Mature product, strong mobile app, helpdesk features.
Trade-offs: AI is a separate line item; costs rise with conversation volume.
Best for: Sites that expect to grow into a support helpdesk.
Installing it on this platform: Footer code injection with Tidio's snippet.
3. Crisp
Live chat with a shared inbox and the Hugo AI agent.
- Free plan available.
- Paid from $45/month per workspace rather than per seat.
- Inbox covers chat, email and messaging channels.
Strengths: Per-workspace pricing is friendly to teams; tidy shared inbox.
Trade-offs: The jump from free to paid is larger than most.
Best for: Small teams that share one inbox.
Installing it on this platform: Footer code injection.
4. Chatway
Live chat with an AI agent, help center and a unified inbox for website chat, WhatsApp Business, email, Messenger and Instagram DMs.
- Free plan: 1 seat, 50 conversations a month.
- $31/month billed yearly, $39 monthly.
- AI agent at $0.50 per resolved conversation.
Strengths: Generous free plan, inexpensive paid plan, social inbox.
Trade-offs: AI is usage-priced on top of the plan.
Best for: Owners who answer chats themselves and want AI for overflow.
Installing it on this platform: Footer code injection.
5. tawk.to
Free human live chat with unlimited agents.
- Free.
- $29/month to remove branding.
- AI features are paid add-ons.
Strengths: Free with no seat limits.
Trade-offs: Built for people answering, not AI-first.
Best for: Sites with someone available during business hours.
Installing it on this platform: Footer code injection with tawk.to's widget code.

6. Chatbase
An AI agent trained on your website and documents, with actions on higher plans.
- Hobby $40/month with 700 message credits ($32 billed yearly).
- Basic $150/month with 4,000 credits.
- A 7-day trial rather than a free plan.
Strengths: Strong content-trained answers.
Trade-offs: No free tier; no human live chat on the entry plan.
Best for: Information-heavy sites where most questions are answered on existing pages.
Installing it on this platform: Footer code injection.
7. Elfsight AI Chatbot
An AI chatbot widget from Elfsight's widget library, trained on your site.
- Free forever: 1 chatbot, 50 AI messages and 200 views a month.
- Basic $5/month billed yearly (300 messages, 5,000 views).
- Lists Squarespace among supported builders.
Strengths: Cheapest paid AI widget here.
Trade-offs: Message and view caps; a widget, not a support platform with live chat.
Best for: Small sites wanting simple AI answers.
Installing it on this platform: Footer code injection or a code block.
8. Intercom
A helpdesk with the Fin AI agent, used by larger teams.
- Essential $29 per seat a month billed yearly ($39 monthly).
- Fin at $0.99 per outcome.
- 14-day free trial.
Strengths: Mature AI agent and reporting.
Trade-offs: Per-seat plus per-outcome pricing is a lot for a small site.
Best for: Businesses with a support team and budget.
Installing it on this platform: Footer code injection.
9. HubSpot
HubSpot's free CRM includes live chat and a chatbot builder tied to your contacts.
- Free with the free CRM.
- Paid HubSpot tiers add automation and AI.
- Chat installs through HubSpot's tracking code.
Strengths: Leads land straight in a CRM.
Trade-offs: Best value only if you use HubSpot for marketing and sales.
Best for: Lead-generation sites already on HubSpot.
Installing it on this platform: Footer code injection with the HubSpot tracking code.
Live chat, an AI agent, or both?
The nine tools fall into three groups, and picking the group first narrows the choice quickly:
| Group | Tools here | Choose it when |
|---|---|---|
| Human live chat first | tawk.to, HubSpot chat | Someone is available during your hours and most questions need a person |
| AI agent first | Chatbase, Elfsight | Most questions are already answered on your pages and you rarely need to step in |
| Both, with handover | Conferbot, Tidio, Crisp, Chatway, Intercom | The AI should handle repeat questions and pass the rest to a person with the history attached |
Most small Squarespace sites land in the third group sooner or later: the AI clears the repetitive questions at night and on weekends, and a person takes the conversations that need judgment. The thing to check is the handover itself. When the AI hands over, does your team get a notification, see the full conversation, and reply from a phone? If the answer is no, visitors repeat themselves, which is the fastest way to make chat feel worse than email. Our comparison of chatbots and live chat goes deeper on the trade-off.
Show the bot only where it helps
Footer injection puts the chat on every page, which is right for most sites. Sometimes it is not: a portfolio might want chat only on the contact and pricing pages, and a shop might want a different greeting on product pages. Squarespace gives you two ways to control this:
- Page header injection. In a page's settings, under Advanced, paste the snippet into the page header box instead of the site-wide footer. The chat then loads on that page only.
- Rules in the chat tool. Most tools let you hide the launcher on chosen URLs from their own dashboard; in Conferbot that is the Disabled URLs setting on the bot. You keep one site-wide snippet and control where it shows without editing pages.
The second route is easier to maintain, because changing it does not mean editing pages. Whichever you choose, do not load the snippet twice: if it is in the footer, leave it out of page headers.
Consent, privacy and accessibility
A chat widget sets cookies or local storage and, if visitors type their details, collects personal data. Three things to do on a Squarespace site:
- Mention the tool in your privacy policy, including what it stores and where.
- Check how it behaves with your cookie banner, accepted and declined, so you know whether visitors who decline still see the chat.
- Ask for consent in the flow before collecting an email or phone number, and keep only what you need.
For EU and UK visitors, our chatbot GDPR guide covers lawful basis, retention and deletion requests. For keyboard and screen-reader users, the chatbot accessibility guide lists what to test before launch.
Before you commit: a short checklist
- Does your Squarespace plan include Code Injection?
- Does the tool's free plan cover the chats you get in a typical month?
- How is AI charged, and what happens when you run out: does the bot stop, or does the bill grow?
- Can a person take over, from a phone, with the whole conversation in view?
- Can the bot answer on the messaging apps your customers already use?
- Can you hide the launcher on pages where it gets in the way?
- Can you export conversations and contacts if you leave?
If you are still choosing between a widget and a full platform, our ranking of AI chatbot builders compares the platforms side by side.
Selling on Squarespace? What a chatbot can and cannot see
Squarespace Commerce stores raise one question first: can the bot see orders? With Code Injection, a chat tool runs on your pages but does not read Squarespace's order data, and custom code does not run on checkout pages at all. So:
- Product and policy questions are a strong fit. Train the bot on product pages, shipping, returns and sizing, and it answers while the shopper is still deciding.
- "Where is my order?" should send logged-in customers to their order history and hand exceptions to a person, never guess. The order tracking template works that way.
- Checkout help belongs on the cart and product pages, because chat cannot run on checkout. The abandoned cart guide covers timing.
Good first flows: a product recommendation quiz, a returns assistant and a gift finder for seasonal peaks.
For services, creators and portfolios
Many Squarespace sites are not shops at all: studios, consultants, photographers, restaurants and coaches. For them, the chat's job is turning a visitor into a booked call or a qualified enquiry:
| Site | Flow worth building | Starting point |
|---|---|---|
| Studio or consultant | Qualify the project, collect budget and timeline, book a call | lead qualification chatbot |
| Clinic, salon or coach | Answer service questions, link to the booking page | appointment booking chatbot |
| Restaurant | Hours, menu, reservations | reservation bot |
| Any site, after hours | Answer the top questions, take a message | after-hours template |
Hand anything that needs judgment to a person, and say so in the chat. Our human handoff guide covers routing, and the lead generation chatbot guide covers qualification questions that do not put people off.
What to give the bot before launch
An AI agent is only as good as what it is allowed to read. Before launch, collect the content your visitors actually ask about and make sure it exists on your site or in a document:
- Services or products, with prices only if they are stable enough to quote.
- Opening hours, locations, delivery areas and lead times.
- Shipping, returns and refund rules, written as you would say them in an email.
- The ten questions your inbox gets most, each with a short, clear answer.
- What the bot must never answer, such as quotes for custom work or anything medical, legal or financial.
Then train the bot on those pages, test it with real questions and fill the gaps it reveals. Our guide to training a chatbot on a knowledge base walks through the process, and the fallback message examples show what the bot should say when it does not know.
How to tell whether the chat is working
After a month, look at four numbers rather than the total number of chats:
| Metric | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| Containment rate | Share of chats the bot resolved without a person |
| First response time | How long visitors waited when a person was needed |
| Enquiries or bookings from chat | Whether chat is creating business, not just conversations |
| Repeat questions the bot missed | What to add to its content next |
Most chat tools report the first two; the other two need you to tag conversations or read a sample each week. Conferbot's chatbot analytics track conversation and engagement metrics per bot, which makes the weekly review quick.
Sites in more than one language
Squarespace sites that serve several languages, whether through separate pages or a translation tool, should check how the chat copes. An AI agent usually answers in the language it is asked in, but the widget's greeting, buttons and any fixed flow text need translating, and the bot needs sources in each language to answer accurately. If you only support some languages in chat, hide the launcher on the pages for the others. The multilingual chatbot guide and the multilingual support template are good starting points.
What a Squarespace chatbot really costs
Add up three things, not one:
- Your Squarespace plan. Code Injection needs Core, Plus or Advanced (or a qualifying legacy plan). If you are on Basic, the upgrade is part of the cost of any snippet-based chat.
- The tool's plan, including seats if it prices per agent.
- AI usage: per resolved conversation (Chatway), per outcome (Intercom's Fin), message credits (Chatbase), message caps (Elfsight) or a conversation allowance (Conferbot).
Estimate a month's chats, then price each option at that volume with the chatbot cost calculator. The free website chatbot comparison lists what each free plan includes, and our free trial vs free plan guide explains what usually changes when a trial ends.
How to test two tools on your Squarespace site
- Add one tool at a time to Footer code injection; never run two chats together.
- Train both on the same pages: services or products, FAQ, shipping and returns.
- Ask ten real questions from your inbox, two of which should go to a person.
- Check the handover and where your team sees the chat.
- Check mobile: the launcher must not cover buttons or your cookie banner.
- Measure speed in PageSpeed Insights with and without the snippet.
Preview a widget on your own page with the website chatbot preview, and style the launcher to your template with the chat widget designer. The chatbot UI best practices cover placement and greetings.
Common mistakes on Squarespace
- Trying it on a Basic plan. No Code Injection, no snippet.
- Putting the snippet in the Header. Unless the vendor says so, the Footer box is the right place.
- Judging it in the editor. Check the live site in a private window.
- Leaving an old snippet behind. Switching tools means deleting the previous code, or visitors see two chats.
- Expecting chat on checkout. Custom code is not supported on Squarespace checkout pages.
- Auto-opening the chat on every page. It interrupts visitors on mobile; trigger it on intent instead.
Where a Squarespace chatbot earns its place
The return shows up in enquiries answered after hours and in fewer repeat emails. Service sites see it in booked calls, shops in faster answers to sizing, shipping and returns. If you want a human on the other end during business hours, how to set up live chat covers staffing and response times, and chatbot vs live chat covers when each is the better fit.
If customers also message you on WhatsApp or Instagram, keep them in one place. Omnichannel support explains how one inbox works across channels, and website chatbots covers the web side.
Choosing, then avoiding the plumbing
If you only need free human chat, tawk.to is hard to beat. If you want live chat with AI overflow, Tidio, Crisp and Chatway are the usual choices. If you want one AI agent and live chat that answer on your Squarespace site and your messaging channels, Conferbot for Squarespace does that from one builder, with ready templates and a shared inbox.
Start free with Conferbot - the free plan includes 600 conversations a month and needs no credit card, so you can have a store assistant answering on your Squarespace site this afternoon.
